    • Muscle Massage

Posted at 7:05 AM by Brittany, on January 18, 2016

Although I find myself running much less in the winter months, my desire for a good massage never dies. Maybe it’s the grey skies, or maybe it’s the cold weather, but I find myself hibernating more in the winter. I think my spirit animal is a bear because I’m all about facilitating tissue insulation through cookie consumption.

      img_6739

      img_6738

      I digress…

When I’m running a lot my muscles become accustomed to the wear and tear I put them through, & when I run less I feel each mile much quicker. No surprises there.

      img_6682

Is it just me, or does the map route of this run look similar to the shape of the state?

While I was in Arizona I ran more in those two weeks than I had in the entire month of December. This meant my muscles felt the fatigue of my neglect. I use a foam roller, but these days I only use it for my back. Plus bringing a giant foam tube on an airplane just isn’t feasible when you need every ounce of space for snacks.

      img_6703

Along with many sunny Arizona runs I also watched a lot of movies, spent new years eve volunteering the same way I did last year, went on a few bike rides, hiked a couple mountains, and had many lovely conversations with family.

      img_6687

      img_6688

With all this adventuring my step mom was kind enough to buy me a massage that satisfied every fiber of my being, but massages aren’t cheap and my shoulders and neck resemble a field of clustered grape vines. Insert tiger tail, a small and easy way to bring my massage with me everywhere I go!

This hand held massage tool is SO convenient for spots like quads and necks. Or at least that’s what I’ve been using mine for. The euphoria I feel when I use this on my neck is like that of a monkey finding bugs in their fur. I have the classic, but there is an even smaller one for easier portability.

While I base my muscle rolling on feel (hurtssss so goooood), it’s nice to have a reference of trigger spots to search for. The happy muscles book intrigued my inner science lover and was like a mini anatomy class.

Nothing beats an actual massage, but at $80 a pop I find paying $35 one time for a muscle roller to be a much better option. Plus, I’m all about shopping local. Since being back home in Washington I’ve only run four miles (whoa there, slow down Brittany), but the knots in my neck are still large and in charge.

      img_6744

      Muscle fuel.

Stretch more, eat green, drink water, roll muscles – the way to a happy body and happy mind. Oh and in my case, EAT. LESS. SUGAR. One day I’ll master that. 😉

Q: Do you take care of your muscles like you should? I’m a work in progress.

    • May the Life Force Be with You

Posted at 7:00 AM by Brittany, on January 11, 2016

“Prana (प्राण, prāṇa) is the Sanskrit word for “life force” and the term refers collectively to all cosmic energy, permeating the universe on all levels.”

Have you ever stopped to sit with your thoughts? No distractions, no deadlines, no where to be, just you and your brain noise. I’ve been more in touch with my thoughts lately than I ever have been, both good and bad.

This energy pull within the universe can be controlled simply by the manifestations you project within your own head. My goal for 2016 was to honor my thoughts and focus more on paying attention to them, and so far I’m off to a good start.

      img_6686

As I watched the Star Wars movies with my family in Arizona the last couple weeks (I’m back home now) I realized this principle of “controlling” your mind made its way to the big screen back in 1977 when the movies were first released.

In order to be a successful Jedi, one must be aware their thoughts to prevent them from slipping over to the dark side. When we let our negative thoughts take over, life becomes somewhat of a spiral. If only we all had someone like Yoda to fall back on.

      img_6669

      I’m Brittany, and I’m 12 yrs old.

Jedi’s remind me of Yogis in a way. Both have a peaceful way about them and enjoy helping others. I’ve been going through a bit of an odd spot in my life lately where I’ve had to work hard to ensure my thoughts stay on track. To facilitate this process I’ve been trying to become a Jedi incorporate more yoga into my days.

      1538900_234535586718691_2122204467_n (1)

To be a Jedi, one must have the proper gear. I took it upon myself to ensure I’m bundled and ready to get my zen on with none other than prAna clothing company. With a mission to inspire healthy, active, and free-spirited living, I knew I had to get myself some of their clothes. The holidays may be over, but sale items stop for no one.

I’m usually all about comfort without caring about style, but with prAna the two worlds collide. Just like a Jedi and a Yogi. I’ve clearly been bitten by the Star Wars bug.

      w1avav315_gravel_l
      W1AVAV315_GRAVEL_G_ALT_2
      w4ergo315_black_l
      W4ERGO315_BLACK_G_ALT_2

I fell in love with these two items and haven’t taken them off. So soft, so cozy, fit like a glove, and perfect for work and play. A company that seeks out sustainable ways of life for products and people just screams positive vibes.

Prana means life force, Jedi mind mastering uses the force, and when combined to ensure a happy and healthy life I leave you with this: may the life force be with you.

Q: How do you practice manifesting a life you want? I’m all about the hippie dippie vibes. Manifest your destiny, and life follows somewhere behind.

    • Customized iPhone Case for the Techie in Your Life

Posted at 5:51 AM by Brittany, on December 3, 2015
      *This giveaway is now closed*

I’m somewhat of a black and white person. I don’t stray far from routine (what little routine I have right now), I don’t like change (though I seek it because I know it’s good for me), and my style has tones of black and…black.

I mean…just look at my blog layout. 😉

      IMG_5981-0

With all that said, when I got an e-mail from Elin at CaseApp asking me to design my own personalized cell phone case, a case which would not only change my current one, but take it from black to something more lively – I was intrigued.

      Maybe.

      IMG_4683-0

What do you mean it’s time for some color!?

I don’t consider myself very creative in this way, and I initially had no idea what I wanted to put onto my new cell phone case. Attempting to keep things simple I dabbled in the idea of a white case, with one simple tree in the bottom left corner.

      10582

Look familiar? What can I say, I have simple taste.

      IMG_5984

After much deliberation (10 minutes of trying different designs) it came it me.

This website allows you to upload photos you’ve taken to make your case a truly unique, one of a kind product. Sold.

      IMG_5983

The cases have two layers to protect your phone when you trip on non existing stumps, which leads me to the photo I chose.

After a quick photo library peruse, I found it. This image satisfies simplicity, change, and a separation from my black and white tendencies. Plus now when I look at my phone I’m inspired to get outside. A favorite photo from this hike.

      photo 4

I admit I was unsure of how the quality would turn out, but I have no complaints. The case is sleek, smooth, and fit my phone like a glove. I also worried about the white picking up stains or scratches easier, because let’s be real – I’m not always careful.

After using this case for more than two weeks I can say the coffee stains, and chocolate smears came off with ease. Must be the matte material.

      IMG_5986

If you’re looking for holiday gift ideas I highly recommend CaseApp for an affordable and custom iPhone (OR LAPTOP, iPad or Samasung Galaxy) case! Or if you’re really lacking creativity, they have a handful of already designed cases that are great.

      template-87-800x800

Despite my black and white preference, I do like this one!

The kind folks at CaseApp have offered you all a chance to win a free customized case design, along with a 20% off code. Everyone can use the code “BLISSFUL20” at checkout for an immediate 20% off, but if you want to play the cards first for a chance to win a free one simply leave a comment answering the question below.

      IMG_5980

I’m also not very patient at times, so I’d probably just go design my own.

    • Fall FoMo No More

Posted at 8:32 AM by Brittany, on October 20, 2015

      *This giveaway is now closed*

Time out, how is it already October 20th!? YOWZA.

Like many other souls on this earth, fall happens to be my favorite time of the year. I adore the pumpkins, the apples, the kiwis (did you know it’s kiwi season, because the kiwis are BANGING right now), and the cinnamon. All the cinnamon.

      cinnamon

      But seriously.

Ah yes, I adore fall grown foods, but I also love the activities that come with fall. Pumpkin PATCH, apple ORCHARD, kiwi…picking up at the store, and cinnamon grinding. I had an epic adventure to an apple orchard/corn maze while in Ohio, but I haven’t done a single fall themed activity since and the months are slipping by.

      hannahvegan

That’s where she comes in. This is Hannah, one of my adorable blog friends over at House Vegan. Hannah and I connected over delicious vegan foods and we share a love for all things fall. Including Disneyland at Halloween.

Hannah wrote a very clever eBook titled Fall FoMo No More which stands for “fall fear of missing out.” Genius. In her book she gives tips, tricks, and shares delicious fall themed recipes in an attempt to help YOU avoid missing out.

I am 2/3 of the way into October NEEDING her book to help me prioritize my fall activities. What’s doable, what’s not, write it down, cross things off, make it HAPPEN!

      IMG_4958

You don’t have to be a vegan to enjoy the recipes shared in this book, in fact one of my favorites wasn’t even edible.

      IMG_5240

Frozen shower melts..are you serious? Sold.

Of course there are indeed plenty of edible treats too, my favorite being the salted ginger chocolate chip cookies. I’ll take them all please.

      Hannah's photo

      Hannah’s photo

Or the chili con cashew queso. Straw not included.

      Also Hanna's photo

      Also Hanna’s photo

Long story short: this book is adorable, it’s cheap, and it gave me warm and fuzzy feelings. You can buy a copy for less than the price of a Taco Bell combo meal (ew) click here, BUTTT you can also enter to WIN A FREE copy simply by leaving a comment on this post telling me your favorite fall activity.

If you don’t like fall, well then I’m not sure how we’re friends. It must be because you love coffee, cats, or the great outdoors, and for that I can let it slide. As for the rest of you, share your favorites!

      Q: Favorite fall activity!?

    • Holistic Oral Care

Posted at 7:38 AM by Brittany, on May 28, 2014

I don’t talk about it much on the blog, but I’m a bit of a self proclaimed “crunchy granola.” My friends often laugh at me when they discover some of my hippie tendencies. I eat a plant based diet and treat my body well on the inside, but what about the outside?

      Get in my belllaayy!

      Get in my belllaayy!

I stopped using store bought deodorants about four years ago, & my shampoo goes back and forth between minimal ingredient products and baking soda/ACV (I need to find a good DIY shampoo!)

I don’t use lotions much, but if I do they are very basic, or I just use coconut oil. I also use coconut oil to remove the small amount of vegan friendly mascara that I wear, and my soap is usually locally sourced and made with natural oils. Excuse me while I go hug a tree.

Basically I try to minimize any added “junk” to my outside body. It makes me feel good, so I roll with it. To each their own right? That’s not to say if my only option for shampoo is a bottle of Suave and my hair looks like a busted grease ball I won’t use it, because I will.

      I’m not that extreme.

      This is straight magic.

      This is straight magic.

One thing I struggled to get away from was mainstream toothpaste. As an avid coffee drinker, I had a hard time letting go of my fluoride filled Arm and Hammer toothpaste. I was convinced the baking soda in this toothpaste was the only way to achieve a bright white smile.

I bounced between Arm and Hammer and Xyli-White.

      xylitol-toothpaste

I like Xyli-White, but it never really blew me away.

I’m a big believer in essential oils, and I have a nice collection that ranges from lavender and lemon, to “peace and calming” and thieves.

      20140515-193141

I recently started using a toothpaste/mouthwash made with thieves oil. Thieves Oil is a blend of five essential oils that are documented to be highly anti-infectious, antiviral, antibacterial, and antiseptic. To learn more about this amazing oil click here. Or click here. Do it.

      20140515-193150

I’ve never been a fan of alcohol based mouthwashes, which are 90% of the mouthwashes on the market. The alcohol actually dries your mouth out, and can cause WORSE breath than what you started with.

Sure, the alcohol can kill bacteria, but a dry mouth can breed it.

OK enough science, how about some photographic evidence? This stuff gets my teeth brighter, whiter, smoother, and cleaner than any other product I’ve used. I’m hooked and beyond obsessed.

      20140515-193212Sorry, I had to.

For the record, this post is all me. No compensation or products were received in exchange for my thoughts, I just love it! I also LOVE the flavor. It’s very unique, and I find myself excited to swish this stuff!

      20140515-193200

Yay teeth! Some of you know once upon a time I was going to school for dental hygiene, so I’ve always had a bit of a thing for teeth. This feeds not only my passion for teeth, but also my passion for a natural lifestyle. I just can’t hang with a lot of the ADA approved shit.

I can continue to drink my beloved black crack AND have a bright white smile. Along with the oral care I have thieves hand soap, house cleaner, and straight up oil. The therapeutic and holistic properties of essential oils are fantastic, and they fuel my inner granola.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some tree bark to go chew on.

Q: What are your thoughts on holistic approaches to health care? I’m a hugeeee fan of holistic errythang.

    • All the Single Ladies…

Posted at 7:11 AM by Brittany, on May 14, 2014

This post will not contain images of me shaking my thang like Beyonce, instead I want to share something else that will burn your eyes out…literally.

I hate this phrase, but this one legit makes sense.

I hate this phrase, but this one legit makes sense.

Way back in the day I had a consistent running partner, and this made for carefree running in any area of town. These days all my runs are solo which I LOVE, but I’d be lying if I said my mind didn’t wander to episodes of CSI whenever a sketchy car drove by.

      036037

      038

One of my favorite regular customers at Starbucks used to be a police officer, and is one of those “protective fatherly” like people. Anytime we talk running (because 90% of my conversations with a lot of customers are about running) he asks me about running alone. For weeks he pestered me (in a loving way that fathers do) to get some mace, so I did.

Up until recently I only carried a few things with me when I ran, sometimes some water, once in a while some food, but other than that only two items were constant run items.

Gary my Garmin, because I am a numbers freak.

Gary my Garmin, because I am a numbers freak.

My RoadID, in case I am attacked by radioactive bears or trip and pass out in a ditch.

My RoadID in case I am attacked by radioactive bears, or trip and pass out in a ditch.

This all changed when I was sent a Mace Pepper Spray, Jogger Model. This Mace is perfect for runners (or hikers, and walkers!) because it fits nicely in your hand for easy access. I usually hate carrying things when I run, but I found no annoyances with this.

      006

      007

Boom – thumb pushes button, prepare for total domination. Naturally I had to see how it worked. Nothing worse than needing to actually use this and having no idea what to do.

      014

      POW. Right in the kisser.

      POW. Right in the kisser.

I chose black over pink because here are my thoughts on color: If someone is coming to attack you and notices a bright pink something in your hand, they are going to know to potentially avoid that, or even try to knock it out of your hand. The black is a bit more discrete and in my mind this means a better chance of going unnoticed.

Also, the pink is just obnoxious..sorry.

      Sleek and black...like my soul.

      Sleek and black…like my soul.

If you are a woman, and you run alone (esp early mornings or late nights when it’s dark) I highly recommend this Mace, it’s better than carrying nothing! I will be taking this on all my runs until I perfect the art of teleportation. Until then, eyeballs beware!

      Miles by Mace.

      Miles by Mace.

Oh, this is totally cool for men to carry too! Lions, tigers, and flesh melting laser eyed bears OH MY! My Mace makes me feel better in case any savage animals cross my path too!

Q: Do you take any precautions when running/hiking/walking alone?

    • Enjoy Life: Dark Chocolate Morsels

Posted at 8:29 AM by Brittany, on February 6, 2014

When Enjoy Life Foods messaged me and asked if I’d like to try and review their new dark chocolate morsels I didn’t have to think twice. This is the sixth product review I’ve done for ELF, and just like everything else I’ve tried, these morsels are delicious.

      001

I had to try them by the handful because, well…because I had to.

      002

Once I knew they were rich and decadent on their own, I wanted to try them in a tried and true recipe. SO, I made my coffee energy bites that I am obsessed with and added 1/2 cup of these chocolate morsels for an extra special treat. They were delicious.

      006005

I promise these are the last photos of coffee energy bites you’ll see for a while. I think…

Next, I wanted to make a chocolate treat that started as brownies, then turned to muffins, and then turned to breakfast pucks. The texture and density changed throughout the baking process so much that I couldn’t call these a brownie or a muffin. They are gluten free, dairy free, and almost sugar free (the only sugar in these are from the chocolate morsels, giving each chocolate puck about 2.5G of sugar.) Boy oh boy were they tasty.

Don’t let the word breakfast fool you, these are rich and pair perfectly with a scoop of ice cream for a decadent dessert. Otherwise, the flax seed, coconut oil, and nutrient packed GF flour make these an acceptable breakfast bite on the go.

      Dark Chocolate Breakfast Pucks

      f

      • 1/2 cup coconut oil
      • 1/2 cup xylitol
      • 2 large flax eggs (2 tbsp flaxseed + 6 Tbsp water)
      • 1 tsp vanilla extract
      • 3/4 tsp baking powder
      • 1/4 tsp sea salt
      • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
      • 3/4 cup all purpose GF flour
      • 1/3 cup Enjoy Life dark chocolate morsels

      003

      1. Preheat oven to 350F and spray 7-8 standard-sized muffin tins with cooking spray.
      2. Prepare flax eggs in a small bowl and let rest for 5 minutes.
      3. Melt coconut oil on the stove. Then stir in the flax egg, xylitol, vanilla, baking powder, salt and cocoa powder. Lastly, add the flour, then the chocolate morsels.
      4. Scoop batter evenly into 7-8 muffin tins until 3/4 full, and bake for 22-26 minutes, or until the breakfast pucks start to pull away from the sides and they spring back to the touch. Be careful not to overcook or they will get crumbly. Remove from oven and let rest in the tin for 5 minutes before removing to cool completely on a plate or rack.

      010

I love the visible flakes of flax seed in these. I use a flax and ancient grain GF flour mix that is a 1 for 1 swap, meaning I don’t have to use my brain while baking. The ingredients in the flour alone are enough to set your day up for success! I found this amazing flour at Costco!

      011

      012

I tend to be a terrible judge when it comes to my baked goods, and can be a bit harsh on myself, but I shared these with my coworker and she loved them. I will eat just about anything, but have high expectations for my treats, so it was nice to know they passed the civilian (non limited eaters) test! While these tasted fine alone, I enjoyed them with a scoop of the cookie dough ice cream I had from my waffle creation. I had to finish it off somehow!

Q: Are you too harsh on yourself when judging the food you make? Guilty!

    • Sunwarrior Protein Powder

Posted at 9:26 AM by Brittany, on January 13, 2014

When I first went vegetarian the question I got the most was, “so where do you get your protein?” All my veggie friends know what I mean, and I’ll spare you the boring details, but I do want to say that when I was a 17 year old-brand new vegetarian, my idea of good protein was dairy, dairy, dairy, and more dairy.

      Truth!

      Truth!

Now that I don’t eat dairy, I still get the question, but my answers are a bit more refined.

Proteins I eat anytime, and anywhere. Usually daily.

      • Beans
      • Nuts (and nut butters..lots of nut butters.)
      • Quinoa
      • Legumes
      • Spinach
      • Hemp Seeds

Proteins I limit, and consume in moderation.

      • Sprouted Tofu
      • Field Roast Vegan Sausage
      • Vital Wheat Gluten/Breads *
      • Tempeh/Seitan
      • Protein Powders

*I have noticed when I eat too much bread (ie. bagels, large sandwiches) I feel like a total bag of ass, so I have cut out A LOT of my bread intake. I’m eating as close to the earth as possible, with the exception of baked goods of course. Let’s not get too crazy.

      20130823-184310

Protein powders have always been on my “in moderation” list simply because I want to get my main nutrients from real food. However, along with cutting down my wheat/gluten intake..I have been trying to up my protein intake, and I can only eat so many beans.

Insert Sunwarrior Protein. Some of you have heard of them, some of you may have not. Before I tried Sunwarrior I used a basic rice protein. I still use the rice protein, but on the occasion that I don’t want to feel like I’m licking the inside of a cardboard box I use Sunwarrior..or Vega..but this post is about Sunwarrior. 🙂

      sunwarrior-warrior-blend

With an array of products listed aside from protein, you’re bound to find a product you love. My go to is the Warrior Blend. There are three different flavors, & I love chocolate. The Warrior Blend is a complete protein, which is vital for those of us that don’t consume meat. It also helps calcium absorption, boosts immune system, and helps build muscle.

sunwarrior-blend-line-upChocolate is good in a smoothie with an orange, banana, and spinach. Vanilla is good with blueberry banana oats, and natural is good in anything, with minimal flavor detection.

For a raw, natural vegan protein with excellent nutritional stats, Sunwarrior is definitely my go to choice over the rest. The flavor is great, and the benefits are greater. Fuel your body right, and it will last you a lifetime. No pun intended..well, maybe a little.

Q: What’s your favorite protein powder?

    • Enjoy Life: Decadent Bars

Posted at 7:16 AM by Brittany, on October 21, 2013

I love to bake. I love shopping for the ingredients, I love the process of mixing things together, and most of all I love to eat what I have created. I don’t buy a lot of baked goods at the store because most of them contain dairy, and are full of things that remind me of pets and anti freeze fluid- tastes good, but eventually kills you. Oreo’s are an exception…

One company that has continued to impress me with their baked goods is Enjoy Life Foods. In fact, I have a box of their snicker-doodle cookies hiding in my cupboard for my morning coffee pairing. I have reviewed some of their products before, but the last two reviews weren’t for baked goods, which just proves how versatile Enjoy Life products are. SO YUM!

One of the best sights in the world.

One of the best sights in the world.

      20131012-154851

I was asked to try the four new decadent chewy bars and review them. All opinions listed below are my own, and while I did get these bars for free, I was not compensated for this review. Let’s start with my least favorite two of the group.

      Cinnamon Bun

      20131012-154858

I opened this one first, because my mood decided this would be the best one. I was sadly disappointed and didn’t think this tasted much like a cinnamon bun at all. In fact I didn’t think it tasted much like cinnamon even. It wasn’t terrible, but I wouldn’t buy it.

      Cherry Cobbler

      20131012-154905

I didn’t like this one at all. I don’t know what else to say about it..I just didn’t like it.

Now for the two I LOVED.

      Chocolate Sunbutter

      20131012-154913

I gave up on sunflower seed butter after overdoing it a few years ago. This was a nice welcome back snack to the world of sunbutter. This was DELICIOUS and tasted JUST as the name implied..chocolate shell with a creamy sunbutter filling. Two thumps up.

BOOM. This was my favorite one. Are you shocked? I wasn’t either..chocolate and more chocolate..yes please. I wouldn’t say this tasted just like a campfire gathering with marshmallows and crunchy graham crackers, but it was SO good. Two thumbs and one big toe UP UP UP! I would buy this one again, TOMORROW!

I would recommend this company to anyone, but specifically to those with allergies or dietary restrictions. All of these products are free of: wheat, dairy, peanuts, tree nuts, egg, soy, fish, and shellfish. These are also a great healthier option for kids (or kids with allergies) as a quick snack! If you’re interested in trying these decadent bars, enter the code: DECBLOG10 at checkout for 10% off your first order!! Remember back in the 90’s when pen pals were the “cool thing” to have? I remember having a pen pal that lived in Mexico (I think) and it was so much fun receiving her letters. I fortunately found myself a friend that loves to write letters/cards and sends recipe cutouts she finds in newspapers, or even sends small gifts because she is awesome.

Lily and I have become modern day pen pals and I couldn’t be more thrilled. I already love to receive snail mail, and her letters always brighten my day. When I was contacted to do a review of a personalized card from Card Store, I knew JUST who to make a card for.

This website allows you to 100% personalize your cards, but fear not for those of you that are not the most creative at times (like me.) Most of the cards already have a template set up that you can change the names/wording to make it your own. This card I chose already had the arrows, I just changed the names and locations! I thought it was PERFECT! I also was able to choose what I wanted to write inside.

After reading this out loud it doesn’t sound like proper English, I guess I won’t quit my day job to become a card maker haha. Owell, I still love how it turned out! The card was promptly shipped to me, and I was very happy with the speedy delivery.

I must admit I am notorious for throwing away cards that people give to me, UNLESS they are special. Special to me is anything personalized (like this one), anything with cats, and ALWAYS homemade cards. The everyday hallmark card usually finds it’s way into my trash, sorry..I don’t have room for all of them!

I did receive this card for free in exchange for my review, but this would have cost me no more than if I were to buy a card in person. I don’t think there is any competition here. I would definitely order another card from this website! Click here to browse their selection!

Q: Do you keep all the cards you are given?
