    • DIY: Mason Jar Photo Flower Vase

Posted at 3:46 AM by Brittany, on May 19, 2014

This year for mothers day I wanted to do something a bit different than the traditional flowers and a card. I still wanted to give my mom flowers because she loves them, but this year I decided to make her a new vase to put them in, one with my face on it.

      006a

When I take a break from baking to give my metabolism time to catch up to my waistline, I peruse Pinterest for craft ideas.

      007a

While browsing a while back I stumbled upon this craft, and immediately knew what I wanted to do for my mom this past mothers day. What a genius idea. Mine didn’t turn out quite as nice as the original, but I find the flaws in my vase to be…charming.

      005a

      Here’s what you’ll need:

      • Small/Medium sized Mason Jar
      • Painters tape
      • Paint brush (I didn’t end up liking the one I used in the photo.)
      • Glass friendly paint
      • Scissors
      • Finishing spray

      003

      004

If you have a fancy paper cutter that can cut your tape into a shape, by all means please do. I do not, so I used some scissors with this zig zag design on them.

      005

Here’s what I did: I painted my jar over the course of a few days, applying multiple coats. Once I was done I peeled the painters tape off of the front, which ended up making a funky design because the paint dried to the tape making it difficult to remove. Owell.

After I removed the tape, I took my jar outside to spray with the finishing spray, which left a foggy glaze over the spot where my photo will show. It turned out unique and made the photo look kinda cool when viewed through the glass. Continuing with the charming look.

      008a

I chose a photo of my sister and I to stick inside the jar, and printed out a wallet size. I used the painters tape to tape the photo to the inside of the jar. You will want to use some kind of small cup to put inside for the water to ensure you don’t ruin your photo, I used a shot glass. I picked 4 random and fun flowers to match the pink vase.

      I loved the outcome!

      002a

I think my mom liked it too. 🙂

Q: What did you do with/for your mom for mothers day this year?

    • Donut Daze

Posted at 9:43 AM by Brittany, on February 6, 2013

One of my all time favorite donuts has always been the apple fritter. The cinnamony appley goodness just melts in your mouth and is hard to pass up with a morning cup of coffee.

      20130206-091004

I was inspired by a recipe that is sure to excite not only your taste buds, but your body will be empowered to go for a run. Seriously..sugar rushes and coffee highs make for great runs (5miles and under.)

      20130206-091016

      Apple Fritters

      • 1 cup all purpose flour
      • 1/3 cup sugar
      • 1 tsp baking powder
      • dash of salt
      • 2 tsp cinnamon
      • 1 tsp vanilla
      • 1 tblsp Earth Balance Vegan Butter
      • Equivalent of 1 egg ( I used Ener G egg re-placer.)
      • 1/3 cup vanilla almond milk, plus more if needed
      • 1 cup chopped/diced apple. I used a honeycrisp.
      • For the glaze-1 cup powdered sugar and 1 tblsp almond milk or more. Start with 1tblsp.
      • Coconut oil for frying

Mix all the dry ingredients together, and then slowly add the wet ingredients MINUS the apples. Mix together until well combined, but not over beaten. Gently fold in the apple pieces. Once the oil is ready (when a test drop of dough floats to the top of the oil, a drop of water sizzles, or a piece of white bread browns in 60 seconds) place 3-4 balls of dough into the oil. Watch for browning and once the underside is browned flip over and fry the other side. Once the golf ball sized ball is completely browned they are done. I used a basic frying pan with enough coconut oil to cover about 1/3 of the dough. Once the donut is dried off, paint or dunk into the glaze.

      20130206-091037

These are the best donuts I have ever tasted. Partially because they are homemade, and everything tastes better when you make it yourself. You can’t even tell they’re vegan. Make these now. This batch makes about 14 medium sized donut balls, and they were gone in two days. I was in a donut daze.

      20130206-091022

      Q(s):

      • What’s your favorite type of donut? Apple fritters, maple bars, and ANYTHING filled with creamy goodness.
      • Donut or doughnut? Why can’t we just pick one way to spell this word!?

    • The Three Month Project

Posted at 9:55 AM by Brittany, on January 28, 2013

I love Pinterest. What kind of jobless woman would I be if I didn’t? Between the gym, walking around the grocery store, and reading blogs..I need something else to occupy the other 20hrs of my day. While I browse more than I actually pin, when I do find something worthy of pinning I attempt to make 80% of the items I pin. Take yesterdays snack for example.

      20130127-083621

Inspired by a pin, but changed up to fit my standards. Cut up russet potato, brussels sprouts, tossed in olive oil, rosemary, salt/pepper, and garlic. Roasted at 400 for maybe 30 min. It was delicious.

Pretty simple right? It took me maybe 45 minutes total to buy the ingredients, bake, and eat. BAM. I started another pin creation that didn’t go so quickly. I’m sure most of you saw this pin all over back in early October/November. The perfect fall decoration. I started this pin back in November, and I finally finished it last Friday.

      20130127-083541

I can only blame pure laziness on not finishing this craft. It should have taken me 3 hours, not three months. Needless to say, it’s complete..and I am obsessed.

      20130127-083605

Now I just need my own place to start displaying all my creations, my tiny room isn’t going to hold it all!!Completing a project (or meal) I pinned is like successfully giving a cat a bath.

Q: What has been a Pinterest item you’ve recently made that you are proud of?? My most proud pin would be this one. It got 70 repins and 26 likes. Plus I had a blast making it.

Posted at 11:37 AM by Brittany, on December 21, 2012

This is the easiest/most adorable craft you could possibly do for a Christmas gift.

      20121221-100720

Salt shaker from Bed Bath and Beyond, a mini tree from Joanne’s, glitter, glue, saran wrap, and some ribbon! Simply glue the tree to the bottom of the shaker, put in whatever kind of glitter/fake snow you want, saran wrap the top so that the glitter doesn’t fall out, and wrap the top with a bow color of your choice!

      20121221-100708

I just can’t get over the adorableness.

Q: Have you made any holiday like crafts recently?? Share them with meee!!

    • Let’s Get Crafty

Posted at 6:21 PM by Brittany, on December 5, 2012

Being the Pinterest addict that I am, I found a craft on there I just had to make. Since I don’t know the exact website of origin, I can’t give credit to anyone other than Pinterest. So here’s my craft, courtesy of Pinterest.

      20121205-174038

Some of you may have seen this, and when I did I immediately fell in love with the idea.

      20121205-174052

A deck of cards, printed sheets with typed reasons of love, construction paper, two scrabble peices, a hole punch, glue, and binding rings.

      20121205-174045

This craft was so much fun. It was time consuming at parts, which helped to keep me busy. If anyone is looking for an adorably fun craft, this is it! I chose to not use the side of the cards with the jack, queen, or the king. These were too “busy” looking to me and I didn’t want the typed words to get lost in the chaos of the picture on the card. That’s the extent of my craftiness for the year.

After my craft making I went on a 5mile run, and then had an amazing home cooked meal that was inspired by the lovely Amanda. I am already craving a second helping.

Asparagus with peppers, onions, and garlic. Baked potato slices with thyme and salt. Brown rice with field roast holiday roast and some beets.

The rest of my evening will be polished off with some popcorn and a holiday movie. I also see a vegan cupcake in my very near future.

Q: Do you like to make gifts, or buy them? I like both..it depends on the situation. Homemade gifts are more rewarding, but you can’t craft up a dolphin giving you a ride into Narnia. That’s something only money can buy.

    • The Final Harvest

Posted at 7:52 AM by Brittany, on October 1, 2012

I harvested the beets from my wine box garden. These were the last to be harvested.

Baby beets. This was what my parents called me when I was a small drooling child. Beeters, beets, and on taco night–beaners. I have no idea where I get my odd quirks from. My favorite harvested beet was the largest of the bunch.

They may be small, but I am still proud of these bite sized beets. I must admit, pulling these final veggies out of the final wine box was a bit sad. With the final harvest comes the complete reflection of the garden. It was a complete success, and I couldn’t have asked for a better first time. One last reflection…

      1. Swiss chard came first. This was eaten for months until finally the deep green faded from the leaves, and the stalks grew tall and frail.
      2. The onions were the next to be harvested, however the first harvest was simply to “thin” out the wine box to make room for some of the onions to grow larger. These were harvested over the course of a few months, and finally at the final harvest I had three giant onions that lasted for days!
      3. Next up were my carrots. These took their time to grow and were harvested twice. Once to thin them out, and one final harvest to finish off the box. I may have bragged about that carrot the size of my hand.
      4. Lastly, are the beets seen here in this post. Smaller than I hoped for, but bigger than the seeds they started as.

I can’t wait to start another mini garden. Right now I am trying to grow jalapenos. I actually planted these a few months ago, and they are moving pretty slow. Stay tuned for the progress on this.

      Random pumpkin photo in 3..2..1..

It reminds me of Cinderella, or Jack and the Beanstalk, or a pumpkin with a funky stem. I love it. YAY FALL!

      Q(s):

      • Did you garden this year?
      • Favorite inspirational quote of the week?
      • Any funky pumpkin sightings?

    • Brace Yourselves

Posted at 11:33 AM by Brittany, on September 20, 2012

I AM SO FREAKIN EXCITED!! Need I say more!? It’s happening folks, pumpkin is coming. I don’t think I have ever used the word folks before. Something about using it makes me feel like a mature english teacher. I am rambling..

I purchased my FIRST pumpkin the other day. I literally squealed when I saw it, I probably would have peed had I not just emptied my bladder..too far?

BABY pumpkin!!! I had to pose with it, and with other pumpkin decorations. My favorite decoration is my Mickey Mouse pumpkin head from Dland.

I specifically bought this pumpkin to sit on my windowsill so I can stare at it all day. Soon I will buy a pie sized pumpkin to eat, and a large pumpkin to carve.

I am so jazzed. Along with pumpkin comes..OTHER SQUASH!

I am going to turn into a squash this year, you just wait and see. I want to find a vegan spag squash meal.

Monday I did something I haven’t done in a while. I worked 4am-11:30, came home to change, got on a ferry boat, and went to Seattle to celebrate my best friends birthday.

I even had a drink, WHOAAaaA there.

My partying days have long been expired, so it was fun to put my party pants on and spend time with my homies. Needless to say on the 9:00 ferry ride home I passed out. It was a long day. That’s about all the wildness I can handle for now.

Oh and lastly, I caved..and I made a Pinterest account. I made a side bar link right under my bio, or just click here. You should follow me..if you want.

Q: WHO’S EXCITED FOR PUMPKIN!? Have I mentioned that I am excited?
