My fat consumption has been through the roof the last few months. Before I go any further let me just say I have NO problem with this, and all my fats come from things like coconut oil, avocados, nuts, nut butters, a scoop of granola here, and a handful (or three) of flax chips there. However, “healthy” fats need moderation too.
When I take the time to wrangle in my sugar beast, my cravings for all things fatty increase. Makes sense as both have equally addictive properties. I’m not knocking fats OR sugar, but I will say (healthy) fats are a better choice than the typical sugar I consume. After noticing some extra bloat and gas I knew I needed a one day detox.
SO last Thursday I avoided my typical healthy fats. No avocados, no nut butters, no hemp seeds, no granola, and no coconut products whatsoever. Post 4 mile run I ate some protein oats with berries and some chex. I need crunch, it’s a texture thing.
I had an apple and a snack sized pack of edamame around 1, but you’d have thought someone was putting me through a drug detox once the clock hit 3PM. I ate a normal lunch/dinner (I like to eat reaaalllyyy early, but I also wake up really early) of kimchi, a giant salad, and more edamame. I also had some chips with a lower fat count, but my typical fatty treat was skipped, ignored, left in the dust. ABANDONED.
I couldn’t stop thinking about the peanut butter in the fridge. Or the ice cream at the store. OR the chocolate bars I passed by at World Market a few hours earlier. It was ugly. I combated these feelings the only way I knew how.
Sugar. With a bite of a bran muffin.
I wanted to roll around in a pool of peanut butter. I could feel the cats judging me from their shiny tub, but I ignored their cries to mingle and party. It was their fault I needed this detox! I’m 100% addicted to peanut butter, and not in a good way.
When it was all said and done I still had some gut bugs doing somersaults in my small intestine. Turns out it might not have been the fat, but instead the cupcakeicecreamcookieCATSANDfats over a couple days. A combo effect.
I also blame the kimchi, those probiotics don’t mess around.
Q: Do you ever find yourself needing a one day break from a certain food group? Does peanut butter count as a food group? Because we’re going on a break.

the peanut butter addiction is real. scoop here, schmere there. can’t help myself.
Brittany
It’s so real…so very real. HAHA.

Sometimes I feel like a 1-day detox is even hard than 5 or 7-day since it all hits ya at once. Good for you! Dinner at 3 p.m.?! What time do you wake up? So many Qs…
Brittany
HA, so true! It was a long day. I usually wake up around 5:30 everyday, even on days off. If I work an open shift I’m up at 3 so that’s every few days or so. I guess 5:30 isn’t THAT early, but I just find I feel best when I eat my last large meal around 3 or 4. If I need a small snack later I have one.

Funny post! I was in TJ’s on Thursday and I saw The Cats and thought of you. Also, that creamy avocado pudding looks delicious!!
Brittany
AHHHAHA that’s awesome. STAY AWAY! That avocado pudding is crack…
Heather @ HeatherRunsFast.com
I don’t think PB is a food group, but Nut Butters in general certainly are 😉 I, too, often have to take a time out from certain food groups. But only for a few days. All those 21 day whatevers just aren’t for me. And ya, that muffin is most def frowning. It’s saying, “I need to be topped with PB stat!”
Brittany
I confess, the next one of those muffins I ate (package came with 4) was SMOTHERED in PB. One more reason I’m taking a mini break (NO WAY 21DAY!) I’m out of control. HAHA.
Britta
Oh god sometimes the body does BUCK WILD things! I love that you went on a fat detox…I’m not sure I can do it. I feel like when I cut out sugar I want ALL THE FATS and all the things and vice versa when I calm the “fat” consumption. It’s kind of a double edged sword because I think I end up eating more to suffice for my craving. I’ve been eating bananas lately, normally I don’t – they make my body feel terrible but I love them so much. So, I ate my last banana last night and now I am back on my banana detox or just “no banana” consumption. Lame.
ps, peanut butter is absolutely a food group 😉
Brittany
I’m eating a banana as I read your comment. HAHA. I love bananas, so sad they make you feel crummy. That’s how I felt last night when I had 5 servings of PB. FIVE. It was bad. I definitely do the SAME with fat/sugar…and don’t like cutting either completely out for long because I will go too crazy with one or the other. Balance is key, but once in a while I have to put them both in time out. Like today. HAHA. I see a lot of bananas and sweet potatoes in my week.
Anthony
Peanut butter is definitely a food group. I myself should try and give up pizza…..maybe tomorrow….or next week.
Brittany
Or next year…
Anthony
You don’t know how right you are.
Amy @ A Desert Girl
I’ve been wayyyyy overdoing it on the sugar recently. Unusual for me and I need to get it in check asap. That chex and berries combo looks very tasty!
Brittany
I know the sugar overload all too well… 😉
Ashley @ A Lady Goes West
Hahaha, quite the day for you. I definitely tend to eat too many sweets over the course of the weekend, so I try to avoid them altogether Monday-Thursday. It seems to help even me out. Peanut butter? I’d hate to avoid that though.
Brittany
Sounds like a good balance! I only avoided my beloved nut butter for a day….I could never go much longer. HA.

I have a 6 Sharon fruit a day habit.
There, I feel better for saying it…

Emma @em-poweredwellness
Haha I decide this pretty much every time I manage to go through half a jar of peanut butter in a day. It never lasts. I just love them fats too much
Dannii @ Hungry Healthy Happy
I totally hear you! Whenever I mention that I am eating too much fat and people say “but it’s all healthy fat” I say the same as you – that needs moderation too. I just find it hard to go without my daily avocado.
Brittany
Yes!! Everything needs to be balanced! An avocado a day does indeed keep the doctor away, it’s a problem when you add more avocaods…and nut butter..and oil….and on and on….haha
Jessica
I love that you eat enough fats. It is something I routinely fall short on in my pursuit of ALL THE CARBS.
kim
Lately I have been on a bit of a sugar high! I blame being pregnant…I give in to some of the cravings, but sometimes I just gotta say NO!
lizlicorish
I have a mostly low fat, high protein, high carb diet since fats just don’t agree with me. Most of the foods I’m addicted to work really well for me, but I DO occasionally have to detox from the caffeine! Especially in the days leading up to a race.
Brittany
The caffeine detox fascinates me. I never notice a problem with my consumption, I hope this is a good thing. 🙂
Heather P. at Fancy Alter Ego
I occasionally do that with caffeine, especially when I find that I’m drinking more than one cup of coffee in the morning. It’s a way for me to check in with my body and see just how badly I need to cut back. The worse I feel during my one-day “detox,” the more I know that I need to chill out on the coffee. 🙂
I also have a dairy problem (mainly that it hates me), but until I find a good substitute for ice cream, I know that I’ll occasionally dive in with regrets later!
Brittany
GIRRRRRLLL you need to get coconut milk ice cream in your life STAT! It’s so delicious, and has up to 6g of fiber per serving!!
Heather P. at Fancy Alter Ego
Thanks! I’ll have to try that. I’m not a huge coconut fan, but if it’s not strong, I could probably handle it!
Brittany
Well in that case, almond milk ice cream is equally fantastic, along with soy if you’re OK with soy consumption!!! There are so many options. 🙂
Heather P. at Fancy Alter Ego
Unfortunately, I can’t stand the taste of soy, so those never really worked for me. I like almond milk ice cream, but it can get crazy expensive to get decent ones! Coconut might be my next experiment, though – if they can make it taste like an Almond Joy, I’m in! 🙂
Aja
I’m pretty sure peanut butter is its own food group.
The Vegan 8
Lol, I love peanut butter too! Well, if you need a break…maybe you shouldn’t see my latest post of the 1 Bowl Peanut Butter Cake, hahaha. At least it’s a small portion! My biggest thing I need to take breaks from is just sweets in general. I LOVE them, but one way I control it and from getting as big as a house is to bake and give them away, so I only eat some of it. It is hard though, because honestly, my huge passion is baking and well, baking fries isn’t as much fun as cake or brownies!
Brittany
Giving away my baked goods is almost ALWAYS a must for me. I save myself maybe 1/4 of what I make (and my family) and the rest MUST GO! Lately I’ve been making smaller servings so I don’t have the treats around as long. 🙂
auroraroschen
When people ask, “If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?”, my answer has ALWAYS been, “Peanut Butter!!!” The cravings are real.
Brittany
Such a brilliant reply. So, so true.

The accursed holiday candy is my bane.
Meghan@CleanEatsFastFeets
Unless it’s a food which is really bad for me (i.e. chemical laden and highly processed), I don’t eliminate it from my diet because if I restrict myself, I tend to go overboard later. For me, it’s all about moderation and also recognizing certain foods make me more bloated or gassy and that’s ok. I just stand down wind then so I don’t impact everyone else. 🙂
I also don’t eat the same thing day in and day out (i.e. peanut butter). I’ll have it for a few days if I’m on a kick and then I stop for a while naturally. I guess my need to change it up works to my advantage in this case. Also, ten pounds only matters if it impacts your health. True story. Love you.
Brittany
Full restriction will never be in my vocab, just once in a while breaks for a day or so. I promise :). It helps me get back onto my balanced bandwagon. ❤ ❤
Oh, and you wouldn't want to be downwind from me. It's ugly.
Lauren @ ihadabiglunch
Sometimes it’s nice to do a detox like this just to prove to yourself that a particular food group doesn’t have control over you! Haha. And it sounds like the cat/pb combo was too overpowering lately so I don’t blame you for abstaining. Glad it was just 24hours though. You are far too cool to restrict yourself more than that. Teach me how to use coconut cream! Do you use it? If you do, do you get the can from TJ’s? I’ve had it in my cabinet for months now and I’m so lost how to use it.
Also I’m with ya on the texture thing. I always need something crunchy!
Brittany
OH GOODNESS I could never restrict…that word just haunts me. One day or so is enough usually, unless it’s sugar…those detoxes can go a bit longer. And by that I mean processed sugar haha. I LOVE coconut cream. I will use it in baked goods occasionally in place of milk for an added fattiness, or make whipped cream from it, or top my chocolate avocado pudding with it straight from the can (with a little vanilla stevia) like the above photo! The options are endless, hit up the Google and Pinterest for ideas!
ironwomandiaries
What?! Peanut butter isn’t a food group?! I don’t think I’m ready for that reality yet… 😉
katalysthealth
I need a sugar detox on a weekly basis, but it doesn’t bother me too much. So what if I have a handful [or two] of chocolate chips every night? And yessss my fat consumption is over the top. Nut butter at breakfast, cheese with lunch, hummus with snack and avocado at dinner. Oops #sorryimnotsorry
Brittany
PPftttt, never be sorry. I’m usually not either. Only when my gas is unbearable even for me to handle. That’s when you know it’s bad. Sorry not sorry for the TMI. HAHA.
Amy
I totally need a sugar detox right now… But in the middle of testing 8-10 recipes per week, that just isn’t gonna happen anytime soon. But maybe like a mini almost-all-day detox where I just sneak a bite or two to test?… I have NO idea how you do it — I’m amazed!!
Brittany
Well my friend, I have NO IDEA how you consume that many treats and stay as tiny as you are!! Must be the running..and genetics. 😉 If I were your neighbor I’d totally help you taste your treats!
Amy
PLEASE MOVE DOWN HERE AND BE MY NEIGHBOR! I promise there will be lots of sunshine, decent running routes, and a huge bounty of sweet treats! 🙂

I’m pretty sure peanut butter counts as it’s own food group. And it’s one of my favorites. 😉 I hope your tummy is back to feeling 100% soon!
amysrecipefordisaster
I do love my peanut butter! Right now I need to divorce myself from tortilla chips. I am ALL OVER THEM right now.
Brittany
Chips are my next vice…ohhh my..such a dangerous tango I play with those crunchy devils.
Kristen
I need to definitely do this whole detox thing too! I have a nutribullet that I got for Christmas… but I haven’t been using it as much as I should… P.S. Glad to see I’m not the only one with a severe PB addiction!
Ellie
Recently I’ve needed a break from straight chocolate. I usually have a bar for dessert after dinner, but found I had so many desserts over the holidays and into January, that I didn’t enjoy them as much. I found they kept me awake due to sugar and caffeine and I didn’t find as much pleasure. So recently I’ve switched to Clif bars and nuts as a snack. Still a bit of chocolate and sweet, but not as much as before. Why don’t you try starting out the day with PB like in a sandwich to give yourself a fix and then say to yourself later “I’ve already had that today, it’s time for something else”…something that works for me (sometimes not hahaha)
Brittany
I actually do better saving my nut butter until the end of the day. I do ok all day knowing I’ll have it later. Otherwise I’ll probably double up haha.
Laur
I bought those damn cats today… and almond butter. My life is over.
Brittany
I am laughing so hard right now. Only because I know…I KNOW!
P
That pudding looks so good! And I was laughing at the muffin picture—it does look like it’s frowning 😛
Christina Does It All
Oh my gosh that pudding. Yum. I totally know the feeling of longing for the food that has been temporarily abandoned. It is a heartbreaking indeed.

Hi! I really look forward to your posts. Especially your cat and peanut butter stories.
Also, I nominated you for an award, if you’d like to participate, check out my latest post. 🙂 Cheers.
Brittany
Thank you!! 🙂
Arman @ thebigmansworld
I am impressed- Although your day of eats today could probably have sufficed me. I thrive on a mostly carb diet and although fats are tasty, I can askip them..for one day. ONE day.
Brittany
Carbs are definitely over half my intake. Love those energy laden nutrients. Back on the fat wagon today and loving life. HAHA.
An Unrefined Vegan
I definitely take food breaks. There are times when I feel truly toxic and nothing but a day-long brown rice fast will do. Peanut butter…that is one delicious monkey on my back!
hellotofit
Food breaks are a necessity of life. After tonight’s dessert of a huge slice of Ina Garten’s chocolate cake, I’ll be taking a chocolate break :P. But after I ask you to send me some of that chocolate pudding!
Brittany
When traveling the world all detox ideas go out the window!! You must experience everything! Just balanced..right!?
The Zen Kat
I was just talking about healthy fats with my roommate yesterday. I definitely went through a phase of consuming TOO much of those bad boys. Oh and you know I’m with you on too many sweets. Oops!
jennifer prod
oh gosh, i can definitely relate to that feeling of needing your sugar fix. i feel it so intensely that i’ve wondered about my blood sugar levels every now and then. i mean, how badly should you want that chocolate? i always want it bad. very bad. good news? my hospital tests preggos for diabetes at 28 weeks, and so i learned that i don’t have it. just good ol’ regular cravings for that sweet stuff ❤
Kathy at RealTalk
sometimes i need a break from salad! i’ve been eating salad for about 4 years straight and damn, that shit gets boring fast.
Brittany
I don’t think I’ve ever gotten sick of salads. I also jazz mine up and have like two servings of chips with them..so…I turn them into scandalous salads.
Change of Pace
Love that tree mug!! And good for you with your self control. I’m sure I would’ve given in. And now I must go find flax chips. I haven’t had any in ages and boy do they sound good!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Oddly enough, I don’t think I’ve ever gone overboard on fats. I like them well enough, but carbs, carbs, CARBS are my lovers. I’ve tried higher fat/protein diets before and my stomach wonks out like crazy…. and then it’s nothing but white rice, bananas, and applesauce for a day or two to get myself back on track 😆
Khushboo Thadani (@KhushbooThadani)
I feel you on the fats! As much I love carbs, they’re pretty useless without a fat accompaniment e.g. bananas NEED PB, toast NEEDS hummus, my burrito bowl NEEDS avocado! Rather than skip entire meal groups I tend to experiment with my diet by eating different ratios of each macronutrient to see how my body responds.
kadeecramer
I probably SHOULD break up with cheese for a day, but I am too weak. It’s so good but so so bad. 😦
Perhaps I should cut out cheese and reward/bribe myself with chocolate avocado pudding…
Kelsi
I love that this post is about peanut butter addiction. I’ve always said that if I had an allergy to peanuts/other nuts I would just die – I am definitely addicted as well.
Banana “icecream” topped with peanut butter, omg.
Even sweet potatoes topped with tahini or almond butter is ridic. I feel your pain.
Thank goodness it was only 1 day!
Brittany
I have a sudden craving for all things banana and peanut butter…..
Deepta S
I want to skip fats for a day, but I suddenly can’t think of anything but a pool of peanut butter. I wonder why? 😉 awesome post!
Missy
Heygirlhey!
Just caught up on like 8 of your posts.
!!
I need detox today as a matter of the fact.
I got a little (re: WAY) overzealous in eating all the fun disgusting crap I avoided like the plague for decades just to prove a point and now I REALLY FOR REAL DEAL know why junk food sux.
So yeah. Detox is in order so I can approach the junk again with the appropriate amount of respect (re: only once in a blue moon!).
withsparkles
I cannot do any food rules. The more I try to avoid a certain food, the more I crave it!
The thoughts of “no ice cream….no ice cream….no ice cream ” turns into MUST HAVE ICE CREAM NOWWWWW and a monster is unleashed and my craving cannot be tamed except by a full carton of it. It’s a huge failure.
Brittany
Oh girl I hear ya!! I am totally the same way. Somehow one day seemed to work. I was definitely craving it by the next day though!

Super random but have you ever had Crunchamame – Because I just ate 3 bags…. LMFAO and if I had more, I would eat moreeeeee!

Never heard of these…Googling now hang on….

Those look good!! I have a similar snack, but it’s not flavored. I’ll have to keep an eye out for these.

Toasted coconut cashews. Nom nom triple nom!
On Mondays and Tuesdays, for lunch, I fancy having my kimchi and Happy Maca bar instead of my regular tofu burrito and fruit cup. It’s my detox from a weekend of more adventurous eating, I think. It feels good and healthy.
I love your detox!
Food, Booze, & Baggage
Yes, to all the peanut butter!! I basically only buy apples so that I can dip them in peanut butter 🙂 Your salad looks super good!
Atheria
OMG you are me! I’m horribly fat addicted, with peanut butter being a top offender! As you know from my blog, for blood sugar reasons I need to eat low fat…but it sucks! If I don’t feel totally fabulous soon, though, I’m going on a vegan junk food binge…never to return. Ha! Maybe my obsessively healthy diet is actually the problem!
Luv What You Do
I do need breaks from food, mostly dairy and soda. I do well without them and then start increasing a little at a time until I’m eat/drinking a bunch. Then it’s time to take a break. I should probably take a nut butter break but not yet : )
eszternagy
Some days I just drink so much coffee that for the next couple of days I can only drink tea (but then lots of tea: white and green and black).
di @ life of di.
Peanut butter = a food group. I ended up buying a jar and rationing out two TBSP into cupcake wrappers which I froze. That way I can plop one into my morning oats. I may or may not have eaten part of the jar while I was rationing though… 😦 FAIL
Brittany
Yea, remember that two week break I said I’d take? It never even started. Hahaha. I will say I’ve been consuming it mindfully though! No more overdoses since the cat cookie fiasco.
rika
I totally agree – healthy fats need moderation, too! I ❤ KIMCHI…you made the right choice!
