Posted at 9:28 AM by Brittany, on May 14, 2012

It’s about time I gave you all an update on my wine box garden. So far I am beyond pleased with how things have turned out. It’s been just about two months, and I’ve already harvested some of the goods! Here are some before and after photos.

    Onions

    Beets

    Carrots

    Swiss Chard

The Swiss chard has amazed me the most! The wine boxes have seen better days, and probably wont be used again after this growing season. They have continued to do their job, and for that I love them! The remaining wine boxes (I told you I was hoarding them) will be used for shelving/decoration.

The chard was getting so large in some spots that it was shading the little leaves below. Time to harvest.

These will grow MUCH larger, but having a few right now was great. They were washed, cut, and mixed in with some lentils.

It is so rewarding eating produce from your own garden, and this is just the beginning. I will literally pee myself when I eat my beets. I will probably cry too. It will be a messy moment.

The beets and carrots have been thinned so hopefully they will grow into giant beet balls and carrot tubes. Everyone is invited over for a carrot, onion, beet, chard, garlic fest at my dinner table in another month or two.

Q: Have you harvested anything from your garden yet? If you don’t have a garden have you tried any new produce lately?

OMG love the idea of a wine box garden!! We used to have a huge garden when I was growing up (my parents still do) and there was nothing better but to head out there in the afternoon and eat veggies… especially sun-riped tomatoes that have a special taste when warmed by the sun. 🙂

love the wine boxes! and that chard! I never had chard until Feb. of this year, and def. need to keep getting it! We didn’t plant anything yet…probably some tomato plants soon (can’t really mess them up) 🙂 P.S. I sent you an email to get your address for the cookbook you won, but maybe it went to your junk folder, so just wanted to remind you to get me your address.

Your mini gardens are looking wonderful, very clever plan. My husband and I tried for years to grow a veg. garden in our yard but the soil and lack of sun thwarted us. You’ve got me inspired to acquire some crates and try again.

That’s so neat that you have a little garden! I wish I did..it would be so convenient and cheaper too! Luckily, though, my boyfriend’s family has a huge one and I am getting free veg from them. 🙂

At the risk of sounding borderline TMI, I hope you will pee BEFORE you eat those beets…otherwise things really could get messy. Too many beets = a recipe for red pee :)! I’m still in awe of your little garden, super impressive!

Ohhh girl, it is NEVER TMI! On that note..my urine is actually never red after beets (weird I know) HOWEVER the other end secretions ARE! Is it weird that I love that part about eating beets?! I had a co-worker once tell me he thought he was pooing blood..but it was just beet remnant! Ok..now that was TMI!

Your success with the wine box garden further validates my idea of you and manfriend having a bed and breakfast. You could use the produce to feed the customers and yourselves. WINNING. I tried gardening last week because Pirate forced me too, but I ended up getting hives on my arms. And I had a date that night with Mr. Speedy. I FREAKED THE FLIP OUT.

Pirate doesn’t make me garden anymore unless I have a full G-space suit on.

I will open this bed and breakfast, but only if you are the first person to stay. Bring your new running friend, or bring Pirate, or bring Louis. I will install a creepy old movie theater that only plays Alfred Hitchcock films. I will make up for it with my amazing food though. I am really weird, I don’t know where this comment came from.

The wine boxes came from my work! I seriously took at least 10 of them. They are beautiful! I also have been on the hunt for any wooden wine boxes from other grocery stores to hoard for decoration when I move.

That’s so awesome!! I love the wine box garden beds. We have a huge garden at this house but will be leaving it behind as we head to the desert! The best crop we grew was zucchini – I STILL have piles of it shredded in my freezer.

Yesterday, I viewed a YouTube featuring creation of raw beet soup, using the blender! According to the chef, it’s super delicious! You should absolutely consider concocting such a thing! Can’t wait to see of how you design your abode using wine boxes! Super cute!
