Sometimes when I run I think about dancing sugar molecules in the form of cookies making their way into my mouth. Actually let’s keep it real, the only time I’m not thinking about food while running is when I’ve eaten too much before the run, and I have to distract myself with other thoughts to prevent myself from stopping.
I haven’t been running as much as I’d like the last few weeks, and my clothes have let me know it’s time to put down the fork and put on my Garmin. While on a run the other day (one I had eaten enough pumpkin and beans beforehand to fuel a small village) I had empty brain space to think about things other than cookies.
My Thinks
1. “There are three of you, and one of me..I would love if you shared this sidewalk. Then again, you are all around age 12 and haven’t grown into your naturally occurring hormones known as “manners.” It’s OK, but not really…MOVE or I will hit you.”
2. “Oh man, the yellow light is flashing. I’d better slow down, I don’t want to get a ticket.”
3. “I wonder if I’ll ever have to use my MACE.”
4. “I feel like a busted can of biscuits. Too many chips.”
5. Meghan. <—-Post inspiration right there.
6. “The seasonal Clif Bar I ate yesterday was as soft as my under-run midsection. Usually I’m putting my jaw through the wringer to eat one of those.” I love this flavor, makes me warm and fuzzy inside like swallowing a caterpillar.
7. “I’m going to blog about this. I’ll call it running thoughts.”
8. “Oh look, a chubby kid with a cupcake. I wonder if he would share that with me. Doubtful, chubby kids don’t share. I speak from experience.”
9. “I feel haggard, but those guys just whistled. They must have been warning traffic a train was coming. And by train I mean me.”
10. “That run was at a quicker pace than I thought…hmm…GIVE ME CAKE!”
Blogging Thoughts: This post was way cooler in my head.
Q: What do you think about when you have open brain space?

Quite honestly, l day dream about being in impossible situations. Like winning a marathon, or being in a rock band. Mostly, although not always, distracts me from the pain of running!
Heather @ HeatherRunsFast.com
I love the thoughts of a runner on a run. Totally random and blatantly honest. I always think about the food. All the food. Especially “bad” food. Mmmm Gingerbread! Get in muh belly! And they were whistling at you pretty lady 🙂 And on that note… I hope you never have to use your mace on one of those creepers! Nice pace you got going on there, too!
hellotofit
These thoughts are amazing 🙂 definitely had a good chuckle or two. I run occasionally because it’s nice to get some fresh air and sweat it out outdoors, but I don’t always enjoy it…most of the time I’m just counting down till the end of the run…oops 😛
B
LOL I love this post. I think about everything from my tv shows, to movies, to vacations. I mean, it’s a mess up there!
A Carter
Great post! I’m usually thinking about work or dinner. Sometimes I work through a story idea or blog post idea.
Shawna
haha gosh i love you more with every post. this is adorable and hilarious and so much fun to read. it’s so funny because i NEVER think about food while i’m running — i think about how much easier my running would be if i didn’t think about food when i WASN’T running. 🙂
Brittany
OHH truth. If only I hadn’t eaten those 298439 cookies then maybe I would be 5 lbs lighter and this run would be SO MUCH EASIER! HAHA.
RunningHeartless
I’m still getting used to this whole running thing, so my thoughts are usually “Inhale 2 3 4, Exhale 6 7 8” or something like that most of the extra brain space comes when I’m puking. I might have to do a post on “thoughts I have while tossing my cookies”
I’m now going to have to hunt down that Gingerbread Cliff bar, I am as obsessed about Gingerbread flavored things as most people are about Pumpkin Spice
earthzenmama
Two things, RunningHeartless: please do that post- it’s an excellent homage to this one. Also, I too am smitten over gingerbread!!
RunningHeartless
I will definitely do that post!
Brittany
I second this, I would love to read that post. HAHA.
RunningHeartless
So, I wrote the thought I have while puking post. http://runningheartless.wordpress.com/2014/11/05/thoughts-ive-had-while-tossing-my-cookies/
sophisticatedjerseygirl
These are all thoughts I’ve had on a run! I definitely startle myself with the stuff in my head. This morning’s run turned into more of a walk, and by “more of a walk”, I mean walk. Oops.
apartmentwife
#1 made me laugh out loud, #6 made me hungry, and #10 brought on a giant “you and me both.” i could see this being a coffee table book ❤
dorseyml
Too funny! I’ve had similar thoughts while running… normally this time of year it is, “Wow, the leaves are so pretty, colorful!” “I’m going to get a starbucks after this.” 🙂
Brittany
Starbucks is always a good choice after a run. 😉
Jayda
I love this so much!! I’ve definitely had the sidewalk sharing thought while running. And I laughed so hard at the cupcake meme. My running thoughts are usually in the “Why am I doing this? Who convinced me that this was a good idea?!” realm. It’s always worth it though!
Amy @ A Desert Girl
Pretty sure the guys were not thinking of trains when they whistled at you. #hottie I laughed at the school zone one – hope you were in compliance.
kellybellfitness
Normally I think about how my boyfriend is going to react to me being 10kg lighter and 10 times healthier when he comes back from his deployment. 😊 this is a really cute post!
Brittany
HELL YES! Best answer to the question on this entire post. You go girl.
goodpapa
Great post! Though I am temporarily unable to run. The memories of running remain clear. I can’t say I though of food, sometimes it was simply thinking, could I make it to the next tree, fence pole, power pole, or anything else in the distance. My body was saying NO and my brain was battling to say YES! Really enjoyed your post, even though sometimes my running felt like a chore, you brought back some great memories.
Brittany
Ah yes, I often pick a spot in front of me to focus on. It helps when nothing else is working to distract me on a difficult run! 🙂
foodielovesfitness
Ha! Love #2. And I haven’t seen this Iced Gingerbread Clif bar flavor you speak of yet — definitely want to try it though!
journeyhappyFit
Ha ha thanks for letting us in on your thoughts. I love the random thoughts that go through my mind, also the million dollar ideas I have!! All I need to do now is remember what they were and I would be sorted!!
earthzenmama
Hahaha great idea for a post. “I feel like a busted can of biscuits” is the most accurate way of putting how I constantly feel after going to town on chips (which is unfortunately my kryptonite and something that happens multiple times a week). Also, perfect ecard…hi-larious. I might do a similar post sometime about what goes on in my mind during a run. There’s definitely a lot of nonsense that is backed-up by a theme song of my own made-up songs. …..anyway, I now find myself always looking forward to your postings!!
Earthzenmama.com
Brittany
Yes, please do a similar post! They are fun.
katalysthealth
Well, typically when I’m running the only thoughts I have are “dear God, why am I doing this again?” Then I remember all of the candy corn I ate the night before…..
Sarah Pie
I love that you so casually thought about swallowing a caterpillar.. just saying 🙂
Between you and Meghan these running thoughts posts are becoming one of my favorite things to read!
Ashley
hahaha! I always think weird things when out on a run or walk. Usually it’s what to make for lunch or dinner… sometimes I start making a shopping list for the next things I want to buy at Target. Also I’ve never tried the gingerbread clif bar but now I want to! I’ll add that to my mental Target shopping list… ha!
Laura @ the gluten-free treadmill
I lived this post – and yes to all! That is definitely my favorite cliff bar favorite too!
di @ life of di.
I often think about #3 when I run. I have been taking it on my evening walks even when I have my dog with me. Too many creepers to take a chance! Also – I love those Iced Gingerbread Clif Bars. I loved eating them last year during the holiday season!
Matt @ Runner Savvy
Love the seasonal clif bar flavors!
Ellie
I imagine myself as a professional athlete that is scoring a big paycheck. I smile and dream about what it would be like…not the hard training part, the award acceptance part and post race eating! 🙂
Kayse
Hahahah! I looove this post. Pretty similar to what goes on in my brain during a run. I always run past a pasture of cows down the road from my house and stop to visit with them. I thiiiink all my neighbors assume I’m crazy.
ahellams
Eating is really the only reason to run, lets be brutally honest here!
IHeartVegetables
Haha I feel like my mind is either thinking about food or thinking about my to-do list. The best is when my to-do list is full of foodie things 😉
brickhousechick
I Live So I Can Eat! LOL. Food is on my mind 24/7 also. Sigh.
Be Sol-Ful
This post was awesome!!! Loved it 🙂
Melanie
Oh, I LOVE all of your running thoughts and can relate to so many of them. One of the things I LOVE about running is that I can allow my brain to wander and work through things. It’s really therapeutic, and I definitely have SO MANY random thoughts. That cliff bar looks wonderful! I LOVE that chocolate cake Ecard too….awesome!
Khushboo Thadani (@KhushbooThadani)
Hahah I ran this morning and a few thoughts kept coming up:
1) I can’t believe I actually woke up this early to run
2) Today’s likely going to require an extra cup of coffee
3) Can’t wait to dig into my bowl of overnight oats
4) I wonder what kilometre I’m on now
5) I should sign up for a race
LOL!
Arman @ thebigmansworld
I kinda wouldn’t mind living in your brain for a while.
That meme. Best.

Britt & I are twins, so when you come to visit, you’ll get a little sampling of this blissful deliciousness
Brittany
This is true…and I hate you both for getting to spend time together. So much hate is spewing out of my soul.
Meghan@CleanEatsFastFeets
These posts are so much fun, and the fact I’m your inspiration makes my heart sing with glee. That could be Oscar biting my toe too…no matter.
I once ate the most amazing pumpkin (yes pumpkin) and black bean burrito. It was fabulous. You need to concoct something similar while on your next run. Better yet, just come here and we’ll make it together.
Brittany
Well if you think about it, beans and sweet potatoes are often paired together, along with beans and most squash so it TOTALLY makes sense to have pumpkin in your burrito. That sounds so damn delicious I must recreate.
Charlotte
I’ve been eating all the food lately. I’m blaming cold weather and the need to insulate. Its science 🙂 Also i just ate chocolate for breakfast (thats not pertinent, i just thought i’d mention it) also LOL to #10. Right now im thinking give me cake as well 🙂
Brittany
It’s totally science, and that’s what I’ve been telling myself when my pants squish my muffin top. Thank god for leggings.
kathy@vodka and soda
i LOVE seasonal clif bars but i stopped eating them because they have a lot of processed soy stuff that i no likey 😦 but whyyyy do they make them taste so damn good?!
Brittany
Sadly I have to agree with you. I never buy the Clifbars anymore because they are filled with toooo much. I will buy one at the holiday time though…with excitement, passion, and NO SHAME!
Food, Booze, & Baggage
I love the new look!! That cliff bar looks SO good! I hate people who feel like they should walk side by side and not make room for anyone else, I will 100% elbow someone. You don’t own the sidewalk!! Sadly adults do that too.
Matt
I love this post! I think about all kinds of random stuff. I often come up with good ideas or think of things I need to do, but I promptly forget them when I get home. When I run out of random observations to make, which rarely happens haha, I count my steps…usually in groups of 4 or 10.
Brittany
Counting steps is a good one!! I sometimes chant to myself the mile I’m on, “mile four…mile four…mile four.” HAH.
Rach @ This Italian Family
Oh man, I hope you never have to use your mace! But I’m glad you have it just in case.
Aja
Haha, I loved this. I don’t have mace but I have brass knuckles in the shape of a cat
GiGi Eats Celebrities
Clif Bar’s new slogan: Goes down like your eating a fluffy caterpillar.
YAHHHHHHHHHHHH they wouldn’t hire you on as their head advertiser – AHHH HA HA AH AHA H!
Change of Pace
Love this post! I love ‘hearing’ other runners thoughts when they’re out and about!
Having seen many sweaty photos of you, I’m sure those guys were whistling because of what a babe you are, sweaty or not 🙂
Lately on the run, I’ve been thinking about my next bush to pee behind and if I look as cumbersome as I feel!
Brittany
Baha!! You amaze me with your pregnant running, I want to keep running should I ever become pregnant!
Lauren @ ihadabiglunch
Haha that’s my favorite way to describe myself when I’ve been eating too much and not exercising enough – a busted can of biscuits. I feel like that Pillsbury crescent roll cans haha. I ALWAYS think “what would I do if someone tried to grab me right now?” It distracts me
allieksmith
Love this! I also love when Clif bars are actually soft, haha! This morning while running I was thinking about how much I love wool socks because they keep my toes warm on chilly runs!

Love this! Really enjoying your blog 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
Natalie @ The Ravenous Mommy
I always run so I can eat! Especially now with all the Halloween candy I have left, hehe.
Hannah
Ha! I love this. My thoughts are usually “Ugh, this is hard! How much further do I have to go? This street is pretty! Ughhhhhh…ok get it together. Think about anything other than running…………ok maybe count. One banana, Two banana…..Ugh this is hard!” it’s basically that whole thing on repeat.
charissarunning
I don’t have all the same thoughts, but #1 is my BIGGEST pet peeve. I’ll be running in the park and come across a group of people that are taking up the ENTIRE PATH!! ARGH REALLY?!?! It’s not like it’s a narrow path so the least that people can do is leave a little passing space; I’m not the only one trying to run around them. Ugh! Anyways… *vent complete*
Missy
I love a peak into your wild mind, girl!
I’m surprised there weren’t any Chem equations zipping around. Good on you for being able to “let it goooo” on a run.
Ps- Digging the new layout.
Choc Chip Uru
LOL I want to try Cliff Bars considering I have never felt like a caterpillar before 😛
And I don’t own mace – I go for the regular lungs like a banshee trick if someone tries to get fresh with me!
Cheers

What a fun post to read! Haven’t had a Clif Bar in a while due to my obsession with Quest, but I love it when the seasonal flavors are available!!!
Still a Runner
Thanks for stopping by. This runner stream of consciousness was a good pre-run read.
willrunforpizza
OHmygosh I can’t stop laughing. I stopped carrying mace b/c I didn’t think I WOULD ever use it. Seriously though, ADULTS should know the manners of the running/walking/biking paths! MOVE THE HECK OVER TO THE SIDE PEOPLE! Boo. I can’t find the gingerbread clif bars! Only the pumpkin pie ones. 😦 I think blogging thoughts all the time when i run. I had to start using the voice thingy so I would remember everything b/c it’s hard to type in the notepad and keep running….those rice chips are so good. I thought that since they were healthy, I could eat the whole bag. In one setting. No?
