Since arriving home from my mini trip to LA, things have been busy. The day after I came home I attended the most adorable/rustic wedding for a former coworker of mine. Total swoon city.
The dinner tables were littered with pages from Harry Potter and large vegetables.
The day after the wedding I had my long run for the week. I worked 5:30-2 that day which meant I had to run in the peak of the heat. I was dead, it hurt, I wanted to quit, but I slowly finished.
This is also the day I started house sitting for the honeymooners from the wedding I went to, and another lovely lady that frequents Starbucks. I was able to run in a different town because of this!
The run was a bad idea. Well, I would have done it regardless, but it further induced a minor head cold that was brewing behind the scenes. It started with a sore throat, and progressed to full on mucus overload. I blame germ infested Disneyland and airplane travels!
I ended up skipping my run last Tuesday because I couldn’t muster the energy. Instead, I walked to a local yet new to me coffee shop, enjoyed a cup of black coffee, and proceeded to go for a walk around the water. This was a much better decision.
One of the houses I am house sitting for is within walking distance of an adorable row of stores, coffee shops, and the water. I am in pure heaven staying here.
It seems that taking a couple days off from running and going to bed before 8 for a couple nights put me on the fast train to healthy town. I was able to run a 3 miler last Wednesday, which put me back on track for the week along with a few more 3 mile runs, and a 6 miler yesterday.
I’m much better this week, but man do I hate getting sick.
Today I go back to school, and the adorable house I am staying in right now is giving me the motivation to power through chemistry (my third chem class, and they never get easier) with the end goal in site! I want to buy one of these tiny houses!! WEEE. OH and as promised/requested here are two lovely photos of the cat I am house sitting with, in all her (semi) lion cut glory.
Meow.
Q: What are your remedies for a head cold? I eat oranges like they’re crack, rest like I’m a mummy, and let the bugs run their course. Thankfully it never lasts more than a few days.

Glad you are better! I remember I got a fever back in February after flying out somewhere every weekend for interviews that season. It really does challenge the immune system!
And that lion furball of a cat is just so CUTE 🙂 !!!
Ashley
YESSSS that cat is awesome!!!
Nicole
Have fun house-sitting!! And feel better soon! I just came down with a similar head-cold (courtesy of my husband who decided to share his). 😉 They are NO fun!!!
Laur
I want that cat. Right meow.
Heather @ HeatherRunsFast.com
Happy you’re feeling better! I usually get sick-ish at the end of a trip. Probably because I eat like crap and don’t sleep as much, haha. I LOVE that guest book idea. And the cat. I mean, Lion!
Brittany
It’s bizarre cause I actually eat REALLY well when I am on vacation. Given I may have a few extra treats, but I don’t normally go crazy!! Owell, it’s gone now that’s what matters. HA!
apartmentwife
oh gosh, those pictures of the water make me wish someone needed *me* to be a house-sitter – so, so gorgeous. & props to you for making the run even though it was what- 3pm? ah!
Dannii @ Hungry Healthy Happy
That cat is so adorable.
I swear by lemon and ginger hot water for any kind of illness. It always works for me.

I’m glad you’re feeling better. My little man just got sick last night. I’ve got a humidifier going in his room, but I think that’s about all I can do for him. If I were to get sick, on the other hand, I think carbs and lots of couch time would help. 😉

Awww sorry you’ve been sick! Sounds like you did what was necessary though to get better. Man, your poor face is sooo red! I’ve been that way after running out in the heat and felt like I was going to die! For feeling better…elderberry syrup and ginger and garlic are great healing properties!
B
Normally if I take Nyquil early enough, it’ll knock the cold out. That and of course plenty of water and sleep!
Amy
Harry Potter!!!! I LOVE Harry Potter! I’d read those books in a single day on the day they came out… And good luck with chemistry! Let me know if you ever need anything or have any random questions. I’m still a chem geek at heart. 😉
Brittany
OH you know I’ll be contacting you should I need assistance!! 🙂
Rach @ This Italian Family
Oh that cat… oh my… hilarious!
So also, I want to house sit for the people who live so close to those docks. What pretty sites!
Glad you are starting to feel a little better. Keep resting!
Amy @ A Desert Girl
Harry Potter pages as décor?? Swoon!! Ugh – travel so often leads to colds – isn’t it terrible? I hope you’re feeling better and better as the week progresses. Love the photos from your trip to Poulsbohemian Coffeehouse (such a cool name!). And that lion cut is awesome. Kiki wants one now. (Or maybe I want one for her…)
kathy@vodka and soda
manuka honey and lemon. melt 1cup manuka honey in 1.5 cups lemon and then drink about 2tbsp every hour. the best cold remedy! also amazing for coughs (i give this to kayla instead of that medicine garbage) and this works WAY better than regular cough syrup. i also give this for prevention of colds during the winter months…kayla as this twice a day and it wards off colds and other gross germs!
kathy@vodka and soda
*lemon = lemon juice but you already knew that 😀
and manuka honey NPA 10 or higher (the higher the better).
Brittany
Kathy the medicine woman, please come to my abode next time I am sick and feed me this hippie juice while rubbing my back.

Blame Disney all you want but… I didn’t get sick 😉 BAH HA AH!
PS: I love the phrase SWOON CITY… I would like to actually go to Swoon City one day, k, thanks…
PSS: I NEVER TOOK YOU TO A FARMER’S MARKET – FAIL TIMES 1000000!!!
Brittany
WAIT, yes you did!?!?! Isn’t that where I got my nut butter. HA. That totally counts. Or maybe it doesn’t and I need to come back….
Lauren @ ihadabiglunch
I always get tea with lemon, ginger and honey. It always makes me feel instantly better (even though it only lasts an hour or so – but I’m sure it’s helping the old’ immune system fight back too!) Housesitting is fun but idk why I find it really stressful haha
Meghan@CleanEatsFastFeets
I’m glad you rested and were able to recover quickly. Taking care of yourself is always the best decision and then you can bounce back even quicker.
What a quaint seaside town. I love it. I love the pictures, and I love your super red running face. I get the same way.
Muffassa. Muffassa. Muffassa.
Say it again.
Brittany
Thank’s for giving me the motivation to rest. 🙂
Yup, definitely laughed out loud at the end of your comment.
Ellie
I don’t think I ever get “sick-sick” (knock on wood) but if I get sniffles I try to sweat it out. I think getting the toxins out after a good workout session is very healing.
In other news, you would be proud, I am now making coffee drinks at my job! I can froth milk, give the correct pressure to pull shots of espresso and am going to teach myself to draw on lattes! Go baristas!
Brittany
You are awesome!!! Making coffee is so much fun, and I have been practicing my latte art here and there too. I’m terrible, but like to pretend my random swirls are actual designs. Making the perfect milk foam though, that I am fantastic at. 😉

Sorry you weren’t feeling great for a few days! As cliche as it sounds, I find that the best cure for me when I’m feeling off is rest & proper nutrition (and hydration)! House sitting sounds so fun- I’d love to be able to check out different areas of a town for a few days and get a feel for the place!
Lucie Elizabeth (@CollectingLight)
Blergh head colds! It seems like the whole world has some flue type thing at the moment (but coffee makes everything better, right?)…..I think for me, SLEEP is the best medicine!

Glad your feeling better buddy- My mum used to say ‘never eat dairy when your sick’.
I ate cottage cheese to spite her.
You don’t eat dairy.
She’d probably adopt you.
I think I want to be friends with your friend who got married. Harry Potter photocopies? Genius. Expelliarmus.
Serena
When I am sick, I hate it as well. Last month I was so sick that I had to lie in bed all day long and the “getting better” phase was not coming
I always try to eat a lot of oranges, grapefruits and lemons because after eating them, I can feel true freshness coming into my body. I also prefer ginger tea which I make from small pieces of ginger with lemon and honey! I am glad that you are healthy so soon because it usually takes me a week to get better. I also try to eat super healthy food from some gluten-free restaurants that can deliver the meal to my house so that my body feels that I am really trying to be healthy again. 🙂 As you can see, we have a lot of such restaurants in Toronto 😉 so I can choose different things every time and stay in bed the whole day 😉 How do you usually solve eating or cooking when you are sick?
Brittany
I eat the same when I am sick as I do when I am not sick. I eat really clean as it is, I just avoid any added sugars and throw in some extra citrus!! I am very stubborn and don’t like letting my sickness win, so if I want to cook then I cook!! Usually I just listen to whatever my body tells me it needs/wants and go from there. 🙂
allieksmith
I love swoon city weddings. They just make me so happy!
It sounds like you have been busy post vacation with house sitting (and lion tail cat sitting–too legit!!) and visiting adorable shops! Sounds like lots of fun 🙂 I hope school is going well for you!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
That poor cat’s tail looks like a duster 😆 And I’m seriously crushing on the idea of that little town that you’re housesitting in. I’m actually hoping to move to an adorable little town like that in the mountains within the next couple of years. Fingers crossed!
Brittany
Bahaha your first line made me laugh out loud. Can I come stay with you in the mountains…forever??
Missy
House sitting is a SWEEET gig. I think it is very telling how charming you are that a “regular” of your customers befriended you and trusted you enough to house sit.
I’m taking Chemistry too! And not sure that warranted an exclamation point because… ouch.
And I’m just in the 1132 one.
I cannot REPEAT cannot imagine studying Chem through a head cold.
Glad youre feeling a lil betta!
Brittany
I wish I could house sit forever, and then I would never need my own house. Actually I could see that getting old.
Chemistry of ANY form sucks big fat balls, so don’t you dare say “just in 1132.” Although I have no idea what “1132” stands for since we have different class numbers over here on the opposite side of the US!
Charlotte
Glad you’re feeling better! Colds are the worst. I always try to continue working out in attempt to pretend im not sick– that only goes so far though. I agree- it is amazing what a little rest and some oranges can do 🙂
Aja
I hate getting sick. I drink tea like mad along with doubling my already large amount of water I consume in a day. That cat is adorable.
di @ life of di.
That cat is so fluffy and cute! 🙂
Also, being sick is the worst. I rarely get sick but, when I do, it all comes at once. I think the best thing you can do is to take it easy (easier said than done though!)
Choc Chip Uru
Ugh hope you feel perfect again soon! Colds leave that damn sniffle for years on end I swear 😛
Cheers

Food, Booze, & Baggage
What a fluffy kitten!!! The place looks awesome and charming. Glad you are feeling better. I like to have Tom Yum Soup (but it has to be made right and spicy).
Ashley
I hateeeee when all my coworkers are sick and I have to be a total germaphobe! Right now it seems like everyone is coming down with something and my vacation is almost a week away. I guess if I don’t get sick now I probably will on the plane. But I think I stopped a cold in the making last weekend by grabbing some fresh squeezed orange juice and natural cough drops from Whole Foods so I hope it works!
Brittany
I think you definitely fought off any cold that tried to come your way!! Fingers crossed you stay healthy on your trip.
thepblover
Ugh that wedding is so adorable. I would totally and unashamedly pin those onto a Pinterest Wedding Board 🙂 I hope you feel better! I was sick the better part of last week, and it was not fun, so I hope you’re up and running (literally) in no time xx
Mary @ Fit and Fed
Very cute wedding, and nice photos of the boats in the harbor, I can see you are getting good use out of your new camera. Poor cat, a lion cut has to insult any cat’s dignity, at least she isn’t quite as shaved down as she could be.
