Lately I have noticed that I go through phases of activities. By this I mean I will enjoy a certain activity more than others and focus on that certain activity with more energy than all my other activities. These activities are broken into three categories: Food, Running, and Adventuring.
Right now I am in the adventuring phase. I haven’t baked anything in weeks, and I have only run four times since my half marathon a couple weeks ago. Right now I am focusing on going out with my friends and taking advantage of fall.
These activities are the core of this blog, and as you may notice I talk about these three things in bulk when I am going through each phase. While training for my last half, I had more posts about running, when feeling crazy in my kitchen I have more posts about creations, and while feeling adventurous I blog about my random adventures. I still partake in ALL these activities year round, but only one gets top spot at a time.
Last week I was very spontaneous. This doesn’t happen often, as I usually prefer things planned far in advance. My coworker and I decided to take a last minute day trip to a town over three hours away. By last minute I mean we said, “hey wanna go tomorrow.” OK!
Our destination was a small Bavarian town called Leavenworth. I had been before, but not for many years. Our initial plan was to make it for Oktoberfest, but that never happened. Instead of bagging the trip, we decided to make our own Oktoberfest.
The town itself is adorable and very touristy. There is a lot of character all throughout it.
The shops were great, but the real show stopper was the scenery. The mountains overlooking the town took my breath away, and the fall trees gave me chills of happiness.
After wandering the town for an hour or so, I completed the task I came to complete. I was so jazzed that the spot with the fire tables served Field Roast, and I got myself a “brat.”
The day was long (I had been awake since 3am for work, and didn’t get home until around midnight) and the drive was far (approx 190 mi from my house EACH way) but it was an adventure to remember and it sparked a whole new level of spontaneity in my world.
I shared my adventures in a local town, my footsteps through the corn, last week I went to Leavenworth, yesterday I went to Seattle for the last professional soccer game of the season, and I even made it to a haunted house with some of my coworkers. The phase of adventuring is coming to an end (not for good, just as the main phase and topic of my posts lately) and I see some more running posts in my future. I have my eye on another half marathon very, very soon! I also need to get my butt in the kitchen and BAKE!!

look at you at being all spontaneous, love it! I wish I did that more, I mean I want to and I try but it is hard. We all need a break sometimes, even from the things we love
Amy @ A Desert Girl
That fire table looks amazing… Like dream come true on an autumn day kind of amazing. I also love the foliage through the fence picture. And your eyebrows are so ridiculously perfect and cute.
I definitely go through phases too!
Aussa Lorens
I do the same thing– I get kind of obsessed with one thing until I master it and then it dwindles back down to moderate interest. C’est la vie, I suppose. And that town looks adorable!
pickyrunner
I’m so not spontaneous which makes this trip so cool! I’m like you where I have my obsession of the moment. Right now I’m all aboard the running train. But that could change in the drop of a hat to the boat train or the yoga train or the funky restaurant train. That is a longggg day but it sounds like it was more than worth it 🙂
Davida @The Healthy Maven
I’m EXACTLY like you. I think we’ve established this already though. And it’s definitely clear on the blog what phase i’m in….baking. Someone asked me if I schedule what I’m going to talk about in my posts in advance but that would be impossible since I have zero control over my passion du-jour (or week).
Also yay for spontaneity! I literally tell everyone when I do something spontaneous because it happens so infrequently haha.
sincerelylily
ummm okay im SO glad you posted this b/c i have been a dull lull and done nothing! this looks like uber fun and im glad you went! im like you and need plans ahead and would have prob complained with the lack of sleep and long drive… but those views! those buildings! AND A FIRE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE GOSHDARN TABLE!>! so worth it. and you look super cute and happy with your meal.
Love your adventures! your inspiring me to do an adventure this weekend 😛
Lauren
Umm, can that town get any more adorable?! So fun and looks like such a perfect Fall day. 🙂 Cheers to you for exploring the unknown – it’s a scary place!
di @ life of di.
I know what you mean. I feel like the majority of my posts are from my daily adventures but I do have some healthy living posts as well (though I haven’t had any recipes in quite some time!) I love reading all of your adventure posts but I enjoy your running posts too 🙂 Looking forward to more of those!!
kathy @ vodka and soda
you know i do, lady! all summer i was ALL ABOUT TRAIL RUNNING. as in i forgot about lifting and loathed every minute of my weight training because all i wanted to do was run those trails. i would LOVE to be more spontaneous and used to be (as in one day i said to a friend: hey, let’s go to chicago! mind you, we live in canada and chicago is a 9hr drive that involves packing bags and border crossing shenanigans so yeah, that was a big deal) but with a small child, things have to be planned.
so glad you had a great time!!
spectacuLAUR
I go through a lot of baking/exercise phases. I’ll go through a spurt of lifting, walking, running, spin, etc. for about a month each. Baking is definitely a hit or miss with me. I’ll bake ALL the things or NONE the things. Lol
Washington is BEAUTIFUL.
Brittany
I just ADORE my state!
katymarie5
Leavenworth looks so cute! And that brat looks amazing – you’re making me hungry!
Amy
Aww Brittany, I’m so happy for you!! It’s exciting that you’re getting out, trying new activities, and inspiring all of us readers to do the same. Leavenworth looks so quaint and adorable, and I really really want my own fire table!! Hope you enjoyed the soccer game too! 🙂
Christine @ Gotta Eat Green
Ohhh that scenery is beautiful! I love exploring little towns with all of their cute shops and restaurants. I definitely go through phases.. sometimes good, sometimes bad. My real problem is that I get bored of things too easily and don’t follow through with them. I need to work on my commitments!
Taryn
What a cool town! I want to find a restaurant that has a fire table now.. that looks awesome.
Ashlee@HisnHers
What a cute town!
The first time I find my beloved Field Roast in a restaurant I might just pee my pants. Dont worry, Texas is way behind on everything so I doubt that will ever happen 😉
Jan @ Sprouts n Squats
Oh yeah definitely I will be usually obsessed with one activity and spend a lot more time on it than anything else be it blogging or running or reading or if I’ve found a new tv show to become obsessed with 😉
That town looked so pretty, good on you for doing it on a whim! Love all these photos.
Meghan@CleanEatsFastFeets
Your spontaneous adventures are inspiring, and your pictures are incredible. I don’t think that town could get any more German looking. It’s fantastic; I want to go.
goodstorysarah
I love Leavenworth! We go there a few times each year. Now I’m going to be the party pooper…..the restaurant where you bought the brat uses the same grill to cook the meat and the Field Roast. I don’t know if that bothers you or not. A waitress told me that after a few times of us going there. Boo! Now we go to a Mexican restaurant there called South. They have many vegan options! I always get a burrito with a fried banana in it!
Brittany
AH, yes…I did know that they cook everything on the same grill and honestly I’m not really picky about that kind of stuff, which is partially why I don’t go out to eat much!! Thank you for letting me know though just in case!
UMM that burrito sounds amazing..MUST go back for that meal! Thank you!
An Unrefined Vegan
Life is good, girl! Awesome to see you getting out there and enjoying it. And I get to live vicariously.
ahellams
I just want to live where you live. You have the most beautiful places and those lovely little things called seasons. I miss the leaves changing so freaking much, I can’t even explain it!
I definitely get on the phases big time in my blogging, can’t change what you are feeling passionate about for the moment, right?
Melissa @ Al Forno Mementos
holy giant pumpkin! you look great!
Luv What You Do
I am loving all of your adventures!
Change of Pace
That is one of the cutest towns ever! I wonder if it would feel weird to live there, almost fairytale like? Glad you’re out adventuring! It’s giving your legs a good break!
I just pinned a very appropriate saying a couple days ago: we must take adventures in order to know where we truly belong (http://www.pinterest.com/pin/261490322087751882/). Fantastic, yes?
Brittany
Loooveee that quote!! Fantastic indeed, thanks for sharing my friend!
Christina Does It All
Yay for adventures! This was such a fun post, love your pictures!!! So pretty.
luminousvegans
What fun adventures! That veg brat looks great! I go through cycles of activities as well. But I can’t figure out what my main activities are. Cooking, reading, knitting and outdoor stuff maybe. There’s probably more. That pumpkin is huge btw!
carrie
i without a doubt go through phases. i think a lot of it has to do with the fact that i have the attention span of a 3 year old, haha, but i get bored talking about and doing all of the same things all of the time. but i’ll go in phases when i’m balls to the walls serious about something and then one day i’ll just be done with it and want to do something else. changing it up keeps me on my toes!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I bet they sell fine bone china in The Wood Shop. I mean… it only makes sense.
And I know exactly what you mean about going through phases — it’s the same for me. I’ll put all my attention into one thing while completely ignoring everything else, until I tire of that one thing and move on to something else. Rinse, repeat. And YAY for spontaneity! (which I can’t even spell correctly, thank you spell check). You’re making me crave an adventure to my own favourite little quaint town that’s about 4 hours away. Stop tempting me.
apartmentwife
looks like a fun weekend – where is the town located, exactly? and, i think we would be friends if we lived near each other – my favorite hobbies are running, baking, and adventures (i also like yoga and photography, but ya know..) enjoying your blog 🙂
Brittany
I LOVE yoga and photography too (mainly food and nature photos) but I just don’t blog about those as much!! I tend to include my photography/nature posts in with the adventure posts and well yoga…I should blog more about my yoga!! We would indeed be great friends with our love of activities!
The town is in Washington state, it’s located near Eastern Washington!
jessielovestorun
Brittany being spontaneous? Love it!! It’s always good to hear of other bloggers who really just take a step back and do something that isnt planned. As much as planning in advance works for me, it seems like it’s the same with many bloggers. I think it’s so important to really just live our life free from time to time. If we continuously plan in advance, we’ll be missing out on so many incredible opportunities.
Elizabeth
I love this post! Adventure is truly a gift to our soul and our senses! Looks like you had a marvelous day! xoxo
Arman @ thebigmansworld
Wow, what a beautiful town- It looks like a postcard!
I think I go through phases but my blog is a random mess- one post is serious, the next is the polar opposite… at the end of the day, its our voice I guess!
You are epic to start work at 3am. Epic. (I love that word too). Epic.
Heather @ HeatherRunsFast.com
I love your adventures so much! I want to roast marshmallows on that open fire table! What a cute kitchy town. Looks like you’re in another country! Can’t wait to hear about this new half marathon goal 🙂
Meghan @ fitnesscrEATures
That place looks AMAZING! And I feel you with phases! Mine aren’t the same as yours, but I’ll like fall in love with something, do it a lot, then switch to something else.
That fire at the table and a delicious beer while there literally seems like my dream come true! You make me miss Seattle SO SO much. Speaking of which, are you doing the Seattle half?!??!?! Then I could meet you!!!!!!! I wanna hear about which one you’re signing up for!
Also my eyes would appreciate it if you did indeed get your butt into the kitchen so I can look upon your delicious and amazing creations, k, thanks! ❤
brickhousechick
I love that fence picture! It is beautiful!!!! You are so much fun, I want to go on adventures with you! I also want to bake with you – I’ll hold off on the running, though. 🙂
Kaitlin
I just stumbled upon your blog and it is just TOO perfect because I recently spent a little time in Leavenworth on a giant NW Great American Road Trip (affectionately known as GART)! We camped in a state park about 10 miles west of Leavenworth and had SUCH a blast driving around Bavaria– I mean Leavenworth. Didn’t have a chance to get a brat, but your meal and that FIRE table look so cool! Yay for spontaneity!!
Brittany
AH how fun!! Your trip sounds WONDERFUL!
Britta
ahhh! I love all of your adventures. Spontaneous ones are the best because I usually like to plan ahead too, but doesn’t it feel kind of liberating to just say YES and do something that would generally be out of the ordinary?! I really really want to go to Leavenworth with you – it sounds and looks like such a magical little place. And my inner ESL child is jumping for joy because it really DOES love look Bavaria! Your next adventure should be to Vancouver and then you can SPEND the night with yours truly and that way you wont be a sweeeppyyy kitty if you have to wake up at 3am! I need to bake too.. I haven’t since March I think? Wowza.
KEEP THE ADVENTURES COMING!
kcriemer
These pictures are so beautiful-just like you 🙂
I need to explore my area more but I’m not a fan of doing it alone. And Tyler is swamped with school, internships, rotc. Blah. We find out in spring where he gets assigned-I’m praying daily for Ft Lewis. Eeek.
GiGi Eats Celebrities
I AM THISCLOSE to doing a sporadic vacation up to VISIT YOU so then we can do a CRAZY sporadic adventure… Perhaps drive all the way to ALASKA and hang out with Eskimos and drink hot tea while playing cards?! Maybe they will make us some amazing warm PARKAS too?!
Brittany
DOITDOITDOITDOITTTTT!! DO IT!
Whitney @ To Live & Diet in L.A.
What an adorable little town! It looks like you had so much fun!
I definitely go through phases like this as well. I’d say I’m in a fitness phase right now, usually it’s food though 🙂
Rach @ This Italian Family
FUUUUUUUUN! I want to come visit this place! How adorable!!
Sarah @ Feeeding the Brain and Body
Well all your adventuring has led to some beautiful photos! I am not an overly spontaneous person, but I have been spontaneous enough to know that unplanned things are always a lot of fun! I go through phases in everything!
The Vegan 8
That town looks like a blast and wow, so beautiful! I’m very spontaneous and love, love when my hubby springs things on me with surprise trips etc.
I’m like you where it’s hard to focus on multiple things at once, I tend to get overwhelmed or stressed. I go through phases. One thing I never get tired of though, is baking! 🙂
katalysthealth
Woooooo to going to a soccer game! Seattle has some pretty intense soccer fans, so I bet it was a fun game to go to 🙂 And that place looks stinkin beautiful. My hubs and I are actually going to a little cabin get away with some friends this weekend and I cant WAIT to explore!! I hope its a sleepy little town with excellent coffee 🙂
Brittany
Seattle fans are UNREAL! I am in awe every time I see them. EEEEK your getaways sounds AMAZING! Have fun!
P
I definitely go through my phases. Sometimes running wants to take a back seat, but then I end up having the best runs when I feel like not running at all. Yesterday’s evening run is such an example 😀
Katherine
Oh my goodness. That town is seriously SO adorable. It’s like one of those storybook tourist towns. I love you with that giant pumpkin. I totally do the same thing when I see random objects. I’m weird, I know! Love that tired yet content soul look! You are just glowing!
Amalia
What an amazing town.
Also, do you know what this means?? We could potentially one day meet up in Seattle. Just saying.
I would love to have an adventure with you!!
I’m glad you’re feeling the spontaneity
Brittany
Say whaaaat!?!? Let’s dooo it!
Nicole @ FruitnFitness
Oh I’m so happy you were able to et out and explore with a coworker/friend! I’m not too good at being spontaneous, not having plans sometimes actually makes me nervous. I hope that this spring once I’m done with grad school and have more free time that I will be able to do more local travel. You can find so many cool things just a few hours away.
Melanie
What a fun day tip and a beautiful little town!! I’m kind of a repetitive person when it comes to eating. If I find a food/meal I like, I’ll just eat the same thing every day until I get sick of it and then move on to something else! Has anyone ever told you you look like Ashley Judd?? I think you do!
Brittany
YES, you are now the 4th person in the last 3 years to tell me that I look like Ashley Judd! How funny!
Meredith
spontaneous trips are amazing, and I admit I don’t do that enough at all!! You’re right that scenery was breathtaking!! Glad you had a great time!
missymiller
Hi!! Catching up on your blog…had to stop here to say YAY! Adventure but more important YAY FIELD ROAST BRAT! I mean! The vegan food you find out amazes me.
