  • Hot Hot HOT!

Posted at 7:13 AM by Brittany, on July 8, 2013

The temperatures have been (finally) rising in Washington and we are away from 50-60 degrees and into the 80 degree range. This is nothing for some of you, but for me I die. I die at night when I can’t sleep because it’s too hot, I die in the day when I get into my car and can’t breathe until my AC gets going, and I die when I try to run while it’s still 80 out.

    20130629-032348

The heat just ZAPS my energy, but I am really loving the fact that this is my “slower” pace lately. My slower pace used to be 10:30-11:00 miles, but for the last month it’s been 9:30-9:40 miles. I can feel the difference when I am running slower, but even this “slow” pace is fast for me. I talk about pace too much, but only because I get so excited!

Check out that vein in my hand...

Check out that vein in my hand…

The real test will be when I start running longer distances again, but I am still content with my 3-5milers. On top of melting out of my own skin, I am 90% positive I had a slight case of strep last week. Aside from having someone in a lab coat swab my tonsils and smear my mouth bacteria on some agar agar, I let the symptoms describe themselves. My tonsils were the size of ping pong balls, my throat keept me awake at night it hurt so bad, and there were small white bumps on my throat. So gross, and def strep symptoms. I rode it out though, and tried at home remedies like ACV and honey with cayenne.

I mentioned in my last post that I just can’t hang when it comes to eating ice cream on a hot day, but give me a cupcake and I will pummel through walls. Even poorly frosted cupcakes get a chance. This frosting melted into a sad puddle, but was delicious!

    20130629-032406

Much less heavy than ice cream, but still satisfies my ferocious sweet beast. I also like my brownies and cakes cold, so they get put into the fridge immediately. Along with cold cakes my diet has been consisting of cold fruit and cold grains. Starbucks just started selling the most epic salad, and it just so happens to be vegan!! I am so obsessed, man I love my job.

    20130629-032333

    Gorgeous layering!

    Gorgeous layering!

The dressing is delicious, but way too oily so I only use a skosh, just enough to give the kale some flavor. I’m a plain grain eater anyway. Well done Starbucks, well done.

While I enjoy the heat in moderation, I have to admit that I am already looking forward to the fall months. October is my favorite month of the year, and I’m already day dreaming about all the pumpkin and cinnamon I will be consuming around Thanksgiving. Too soon?

Q: How do you handle the heat?? I’m a big wimp, I like 65F and sunny..anything more and I wine like a squeaky door handle. I don’t know how my family in Arizona handles the 120F months. Too hot, TOOOO HOT!

IM THE FIRST TO COMMENT- THIS NEVER HAPPENS !$#@$?^#%&

      Your eyebrows…. I want them.
It is totally okay that you are big wimp in the heat b/c I tend to move slow like a turtle and feel sluggish. But I prefer the hot heat over the winter any day. October is amaaaaaaazing…. colored leaves and dusk runs are the best.

Skosh…. I like that word. I am going to use it from now on. I would be totally obsessed with Starbucky items too if I was in close proximity often like you are…. I love bagels. And once I eat one bagl- the only thing in the world I want- is another darn bagel. CARBSSSSSS.

I CAN’T WAIT FOR OCTOBER! Sun and chilly mornings. YES! If you lived near me I would bring your Starbucky foods all the time. I don’t think they would travel well so I won’t send them..you would get a box of moldy mushy nastyness.

I loooooove the heat. It has been in the mid-90’s to low-100’s here lately (except over this past weekend when it rained like twice and “cooled down” to the mid-80’s. I admit that it is uncomfortable to sleep when it’s hot. But I tend to be cold so often that I just revel in the hotness when it’s hot.

      That salad layering is gorgeous!!

I have got to find that salad!!! I love everything that it contains so um, I just need it!
I get super excited about my pace too! When it’s faster that expected anyway haha 😉 Though even if it’s slower, I don’t care too much – I know that there are going to be those days! Although I would be totally okay if there wasn’t haha.
I don’t handle the heat well at all, but I also can’t handle the cold! I can just never be satisfied when it comes to weather 😉

Running in this heat makes me want to pass out as well. I’m heading to Tucson at the end of the week and was trying to decide if running at 5am in 80 degree weather was going to work out for me or not?! I am so looking forward to the end of August when I head up to mid-coast Maine to run a half marathon. It should feel glorious after this nasty, hot, humid grossness.

I am in Az and I run in the heat intentionally. It is good to run in the heat as it helps your body acclimate. It will also make you more fit. When you challenge your body with different climates, you thrive. Your body if forced to adjust and as a result: improves the body’s ability to control body temperature, improves sweating and increases blood flow through the skin, and expands blood volume allowing the heart to pump more blood to muscles, organs and the skin as needed. Higher blood volume allows better recovery and less stress while running. Other than working out, Arizonans do not deal with the heat. We stay indoors and use AC in the car.

I ran once a few summers ago in the middle of the day in AZ (Uhhh don’t ask me why) and I nearly passed out. I live in Washington, I am SO not acclimated to that heat!! I do enjoy AZ running in the winter though when it’s 70 out!! HA! Your points are very true though, I am just a huge wimp! I do still run in the heat, I just HATE IT!

I also threw up (twice) while hiking Camelbak mountain in the heat of the summer because I was so hot. Just a fun fact. HAHA!

I find it so funny that you like cake over ice cream in the summer. I’m the total opposite and have no desire to eat the stuff! Unless of course it’s ice cream cake which I may or may not have had last night… Anyways love that you’re excited about how speedy you’re getting!!! It’s always nice to see improvements. Living on an island, if it hits 85 here that’s like 105 off the Island, and it’s been that hot all week. I need a cold spell so I can sleep at night again! No fan + no ac= bad news bears for this girl

It isn’t the heat that bothers me – it is the humidity! It is pretty hot here in Ottawa -but it is the humditiy that makes me not want to be outside

However -right now I’m in a room that has the A/C blasting and I’m freezing even though I’m wrapped in a blankie!

So I could say this a million TIMES OVER BUT… WE ARE THE SAMEEEEEE PERSON! I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE THE HEAT! IT’S GUNNA BE LIKE 100 DEGREES TODAY IN LA AND I AM PISSED BECAUSE I AM GOING TO BE OUTSIDE. All I know for sure if I am going to get a BAD CASE OF SWAMP ASS and it’s going to look like a peed myself. Whatever, I will own my sweaty ass and just go with it! But I hate the heat cause I just don’t know what to wear. I hate shorts… And gahhh I just hate clothes. I would go naked but… THEN I’d get arrested obviously, and I don’t need to go back to jail. Jail ain’t all that fun in LA. However, I do know Jamima would be happy to see me, cause we all know she’s still there. Don’t ask what she did…… Ahem, ripped her boyfriend’s balls off.

Any who. What was the question? Oh yes, the heat. So I HATE IT. I like a sunny 66 degrees! That sounds delicious! Oh crap, did I just convince you NOT to come to LA now that I said it’s hot?! Well over the weekend it was mid-70s, that wasn’t too shabby, I must say!

I can totally handle the heat, so long as the humidity is reasonable. The cold, on the other hand, I am a huge baby about. I hate having to wear all of those layers and then being too cold at the bus stop, but too hot while on the bus, and then my back sweats while my fingers freeze and UGH, no thanks! Guess it’s good that I’m moving to a tropical island 😛

Way to go getting out there. I didn’t get the pleasure of trying out summer running this year but I do know that I HATE humidity. I think I can probably handle heat but humidity just kills me. I had a blast running this past winter, which kind of shocked me. I didn’t like when it was icy because I would run funny and on my toes to try to avoid falling. I think we can all agree that spring and fall are definitely ideal. I think anywhere between the 40 and 70 degree range is just dandy. Heck I even ran when it was in the mid 20s this winter. CRAY CRAY.

That cupcake looks fantastic per usual. I’m going to make you bring all your baking essentials over so you can bake for me. I don’t even have flour at home any more…

And I think I would eat all my meals (or at least breakfast and lunch) at Starbucks every day if I could – they actually have some amazing food. I need to go try that salad ASAP.

Great job on the runs lately! Faster in the heat means super speedy come October! That salad looks amaze balls (yes, I quoted Giuliana Rancic), looks like I’ll be hitting up SB this week. To handle the heat I keep lots of half frozen water bottles in the freezer. I fill them up before I leave and the ice at the bottom keeps them colder longer. I just finished my 6 AM run in 95F weather! That’s South Texas for you! The heat really quite frankly just sucks. Sometimes it’s so hot in Texas that I legitimately don’t feel like eating or doing much of anything! I hate feeling like a vegetable though! I seriously cannot wait until my birthday month (October!) and Fall and all of its cool weather and what not to arrive!

That Starbucks salad looks so amazing! Summertime makes me obsessed with yummy salads, and I would be completely fine with eating that every day. (which is probably bad!)

It’s so crazy that since I’ve started following your blog your mile time has gone down by nearly 3 minutes! That doesn’t just happen overnight! You should be so so proud of yourself! Even if that’s your ‘slow’ pace, it’s nothing to scoff at! You’re becoming quite the runner! (I’m starting to sound like I’m 40 years older than I actually am) Okay, before this becomes an endless ramble full of nonsense, I’ll bow out. Happy Tuesday!

I wilt in the heat. Though I love, love summer, I cannot take high temps + humidity. Take today for example: it feels like I am swimming in a bowl of tomato soup each time I step outside. YUCK! Give me 75 degrees and zero humidity, and I’m a happy, happy girl!

I am new to running (since January), and my pace is…too embarrassing to post! I think it will take a while before I make any progress. My first 5K is this weekend, and I am afraid I will slow my friends down with my waddling. Also, I don’t know how anyone does it in this heat! My runs have really suffered lately, and I hope that the 7:00 am start time (gulp!) makes it more bearable!

Nothing is worse than feeling like you’re slowing people down, but I am sure they won’t mind and that you are faster than you think!! You gotta let go of worrying about the time!! It’s hard, but once you do running is SO much more enjoyable! I once had a race that started at 5:30…now that was rough!! HA!

Hey girl! Found your blog thanks to Alex, and I’m pretty psyched I did! Anyone who agrees with me about the awfulness of running in heat/humidity (and heat/humidity in general) is a wonderful person in my book 😉 My paces have slowed wayyyyy down thanks to both the heat and upping my mileage for my marathon in the fall, and it’s both frustrating and a good learning experience. I know I need to slow down so I don’t destroy my legs, and the heat is making me do that which is good, but it’s also super frustrating…and I don’t like not being able to breathe. No thank you. Bring on the fall temps sooner rather than later please!

Yes it is too soon to wish for the fall, although my Hubby would totally agree with you. You have every right to be excited because shaving a minute off a mile is HUGE. Starbucks salad for the win!

gah im with you on the heat even though i live in tejas and am supposed to be used to heat..but nope…if i’m out in the sun for 30 min, i get SO EXHAUSTED and cranky and have to nap the rest of the day away LOL. so useless.
also, DOUBLE YES to cold cake. i like how it becomes denser when it’s cold, i guess i’m not the biggest fan of fluffy airy cakes.

I had to laugh…girl if the 80’s are too much for you, you’d surely die where I live! It’s 107 here in Houston, Texas!! To top it off, our humidity has a really high suck factor! Honestly, I like warm weather up to the low 90’s, then it’s getting too hot after that. I HATE the humidity of Houston and want to move to Austin for the dry heat and gorgeous scenery. That cupcake looks freaking delicious and so does that salad….yum. Love lemon and tahini!

Haha! It’s right around 95-100 most of the summer here, but it doesn’t bother me like the freezing cold does. I love the sunshine and heat! 😀 Especially on beach days! 🙂

I love 80 degrees, that’s pretty much my ideal temperature because I’m warm enough to wear shorts but not so hot that I can’t cycle at all! What I really hate is humidity! Love a good cupcake but I adore ice cream, it’s basically my chocolate 😛

how did I miss this post?! and um, WAY TO GO STARBUCKS! That salad looks freaking amazing and YES for healthy eats on the go! Sbux continues to rock my world.. so fantastic. ahaha I love you and your cupcakes, I could literally eat one every day as well – but you know that 😉 We could never live together because we’d just encourage each other to eat cupcakes every day and then we would become obese or just diabetic.. oh boy. 😀 But then maybe we’d run even more than we already do to balance it out? ahah jk

The salad is seriously amazing, the price tag is a bit too much though. I don’t think I would buy one. I get them fo free at the end of the day though if they are about to “expire.” WHOOP WHOOP! OMG I swear living together would cause us to have to start a baking company to GET RID of what we bake! HAHA. It would be nice to have a constant running buddy though!
