So I have a new job. I have been working at Starbucks for six weeks now, and have been drinking enough coffee to fuel a humpback whale flying to the moon. I can’t complain though, getting free drinks all day is just one of the many perks.
After I received my barista certification a few weeks ago, I decided to buy myself a mug that I have been lusting over for months. It’s not often I come across a mug that I drool over while my foot twitches at the same time.
SWOOOOOON. I first saw this mug back in March when I stopped into Starbucks on my way to VegFest. I couldn’t justify buying it then, so I didn’t. WELL I needed a new mug and figured that my barista certification was justification enough to buy myself a gift!. A mug like this makes my morning coffee taste so much better.
I’m slightly obsessed. Now all I need is my own espresso machine to make lattes at home. My favorite part about this mug is that I saved almost $4 thanks to my partner discount. We all know I go coo coo for discounts. I also no longer need to buy coffee for home thanks to my weekly markout where I get a pound of free coffee. Free loot, free loot, FREE LOOT!
I’m trying to be proactive with this job, and I ask to make drinks anytime it’s slow. Normally newbies stay on the register for a while before making drinks, but I want to learn as soon as possible so that I am on par with the rest of the crew. Sometimes when it starts getting busy and I have to make a drink I am unfamiliar with I feel something like this..
I’m catching on though. Thankfully all the people I work with are super nice and help me out anytime I flop like a suffocated fish splashing coffee and milk all over the place. I’ve held my own anytime it’s been busy, and I actually enjoy the morning rush of the junkies coming in to get their
crack coffee fix. Coffee drinkers can be ruthless.
As time goes on and things start to feel comfortable I enjoy the job so much more. I am having fun, and making new friends. I’ve received nothing but positive feedback which helps give me the confidence I need as the new kid.
Starbucks is an amazing company and gives back to the community, along with taking care of the countries they get their beans from. I’ve learned so much about what happens behind the scenes and it makes me love the products that much more! They also take great care of their employees. All in all things are going well, and I’ve started to settle in!
Q: Do you have a favorite mug you use for everything?

I Like Beans Too. Good Protein Source And Especially Helpful For When, U Know, Er….Things Just Dont Move Along….Kinda Like The Freeway During Rush Hour. Yep.
Coffee beans are my go to beans, other beans make me gassy and then my family doesn’t like to sit at the dinner table with me. Coffee turns my colon into an LA freeway when it’s clear and fast paced. We must be related…Love ya dad!
Okay, that mug is seriously amazing right?! I purchased the New York model of the same mug (complete with yellow taxi cab) when I was in NYC for the first time a few months ago because I had the exact same reaction!!
Glad you are enjoying your new job…I think I would LOVE it there 🙂
That’s so great you’ve got such an awesome support system at work. Hopefully people are being generous with their tips too ;)!
Love that funny face of yours :P!
Yes, the tips are wonderful!! 🙂
My favorite mug is from Starbucks, too! It’s the white 16 ounce ceramic mug. They have them right now, I think! I am so glad you’re feeling good about your new job and you work with people who are willing to help you. A good, supportive environment is hard to come by so I’m glad you found one!
That is a faaaantastic mug! I am not a coffee drinker, but I would SO use that for hot chocolate…or just water ;).
Lindsay @ The Functional Foodie
That is such a cute mug. I don’t drink coffee, but I love hot tea and hot chocolate. My favorite mug was from Anthropolgie, but one of my roommates broke it, which made me very sad. I’m glad you are working in such a fun, supportive environment that seems like such a blast!
Love to see you settling in Britt! Now we are in the same biz 🙂 I bet you look right at home behind that big machine!! You are hilarious……and enjoy the non stop coffee buzzing! BEST part of the job!
I had NO idea you worked in the coffee biz!! SO awesome, and I love you that much more now. AHH I want to make lattes and cappuccinos with you!
foods for the soul
Yay yay yay a new mug!!! You definitely deserve something pretty and fun after all of that training. Good for you!! My friend worked at Starbucks for a while, and she said that the energy and her coworkers were great, but the soccer moms with caffeine withdrawals… Not so much. 😉 And you are incredible for asking to make drinks so soon! You’re going to be the top barista in no time!

My favorite mug has to be the one I got at Boston this year. It’s nice a big and has a great handle. Although I do love my “H” mug, too. You have to learn how to make all those fun foam creations! And then take pictures so we can marvel at your masterpieces! I feel like I would get so fat working there because I would eat all the yummy sweets when my brain goes caffeine cray cray 😉 Glad you are loving SBucks so far!!!
I want to learn how to draw in foam so bad haha. I should just watch some YouTube tutorials and when it’s slow I can practice! The treats are tempting, but it’s times like these that I am glad I went vegan. No overdoing it because the treats allllll have dairy!! The soy lattes are another story though, no flavors, but the soy does have a bit of sugar!! OWELL!
I was just at Starbucks this morning and thought of you! While I’m not a “regular”, I am one of those people with a signature drink. Venti iced coffee with soy and 1 pump hazelnut. I love.
Aww yay!! Ohh your go to drink sounds delicious, right up my alley with the soy! 1 pump of flavor is JUST enough without overdoing it too..good choice!

That is a gorgeous mug my friend 😀
You deserve it and the support system 🙂

love the mug! They have a pittsburgh one (not as cool as starbucks is concerned) but it’s still pretty awesome! Trav’s aunt works at the sbux distribution center for the eastern coast, and if anything is a little bit damaged and cant be sold, it’s fair game to employees. We’ve scored some awesome stuff!
I’m so glad you’re enjoying your job! I started a new job about a month ago, and I totally agree that it gets so much better as time goes on and you get positive feedback.
I LOVE that mug! I have a Starbucks mug too that I won at a drawing during prom, and I took it to college with me and used it every. day. I guess Starbucks mugs are just that awesome 😉
Oh and I love the alliteration in the title. Not sure if you meant it, but it’s pretty fantastic either way 😉
I most definitely meant to put the alliteration, ;). Glad you noticed..haha.
Melissa @ Mouthwatering Morsel
yay yay yay! glad to see you’re loving your new job!! and free things … amazing. my friend worked there in the past and when they get new mugs and stuff they give out the old ones to their employees so you might get to have more seattle mugs. 😉
That is AWESOME! If I get more, you already know one of them has your name on it! 🙂
Melissa @ Mouthwatering Morsel
whoo hoo! I have my fingers crossed that you do get them. 😉
In college my roommate worked at Starbucks and she would save all of the free coffee she got each week and give it away at Christmas time as gifts! We all loved it!
What a GENIUS idea!
Brittany @ GOtheXtraMile
I don’t think there is anything better than free coffee!!! Ahhh I would be in heaven. Love the mug, too! Cute mugs DO make coffee taste better 😉 So glad to hear you are loving the new job! ❤
I have a mug collection. I buy a starbucks location mug whenever I travel.
Also — if any new Starbucks cards come out can you snag them for me? I lost my connection and want to continue my collection!
Newbie alert…what are Starbucks cards?? Like payment cards or uhh..greeting cards? HAHA. HELP! Regardless, I’ve got your back!
So glad you’re enjoying this new job! Love the mug 🙂
Adoreee the new mug!! I should probably be working at Starbucks, considering I literally go there every single day. Oops?
Free coffee would be the best thing in my life. I certainly spend far too much on it everyday. It adds up, but I don’t even care.
Glad to hear you love the new job:)
Lucy @ Lucy On The Lookout
Ooh I love the mug! And the new starbucks pinafore (is that what they call them in the US? hehe)! Sounds like it’s going fabulously well, and so glad you’ve got a good group looking after you and motivating you! I love our starbucks around the corner as they are more relaxed and always seem to have fun and time to chat with the customers… I feel sorry though for the little ones bang right in the middle of the city as the city workers look like a demanding bunch 😉 you are totally right about coffee drinkers being ruthless hehe!! Have a lovely weekend Brittany and catch up with you when I’m back x
Alex @ Brain, Body, Because
haha! We call them aprons. Lucy, I love seeing the differences between our vocab and yours 😀
I have to admit I was unfamiliar with the word pinafore, and I thank you Alex for helping me out so I didn’t have to hit up the Google. I love the pinafores we have too! I think I am going to start calling them pinafores for real now..YAY new words!
Alex @ Brain, Body, Because
My folks have a SB Pittsburgh mug and it really is gorgeous! Simple with clean lines, just like yours 🙂
I’m SO glad that you’re learning the ropes of the new job. I knew that it was only a matter of time before you started to feel comfortable there! Supportive, patient coworkers make ALL the difference. I have worked some really shitty jobs, but awesome coworkers totally made up for it.
Have a wonderful weekend, girl! Well-deserved 😀
An Unrefined Vegan
You are so cute. I want to go to your Starbucks and order a soy latte with no foam :-).
That would be amazing for so many reasons, first reason being that we could have a coffee date which I would adore. Second reason being we would be ordering the same drink..almost. Third being I say almost because I LOVE the foam, I would take yours!
I wish I could go to your Starbucks and order from you 🙂 That mug is so awesome! I’m experiencing some serious mug envy over here. That’s one of the coolest cups from Starbucks that I’ve ever seen!
Change of Pace
Sounds like a great and supportive place to work! I can’t imagine working in a coffee shop, especially during rush times! I bet some people are crazy!!
It’s odd, but I don’t drink coffee or tea so I rarely use a mug. When I do, it’s generally one from Hawaii!
SO glad to hear you are enjoying your job! I’ve always wanted to work at a Starbucks, but since the closest one is 1.5 hours away, not really possible! Congrats on your barista certification- woot!! 🙂
1.5 hours away!?!?! That is UNHEARD OF!!! Do you live in the woods!? HA! I actually kind of hope you do because then I will really want to come visit and stay away from busy life, city living is too much.
The Healthy Flavor
Gil, I DON’T get your updates…I have to remember to come check your page! Anyhow, that is so awesome to hear about your job and how much you love it! I haven’t been to Starbucks in forever since going vegan, hate soy milk. I really wish they served almond milk….any idea on that, lol?!
The Healthy Flavor
Girl, not Gil!
GAH don’t even get me started, while I don’t mind the soy in moderation I would LOVEEE to get almond milk!! I don’t know WHY they don’t, so many people request it! I’m sure in the future they will, but they need to NOW!
The Healthy Flavor
Yes, I agree! Pass headquarters a note, lol! 😉
sooooo stoked to hear that the job is going well for you!!
And I do have a favorite mug. Errr I mean mugs. Im that freaky lady who has 20+ mugs in her cabinet. Its kinda my thing 🙂
Jan @ Sprouts n Squats
I read this post when you first posted it but wanted to wait till Meg from http://adashofmeg.com/ did her High Five Friday post as I nominated you this week for the post you did about all the changes in your life as I think you are so brave for putting it all out there on your blog.
Glad to hear Starbucks is going well and love the mug you got yourself 🙂
You are so sweet, thank you so much!!
Love hearing that your job is going so well for you, and things are starting to look up! Makes me smile from ear to ear ❤
I love how you always eat / drink on the rock pavement. It makes me smile. My favorite coffee mug read “First one to smile wins” – that was a good one. But alas I dropped it and lost the handle. Mugs get warm so I needed a new one! Glad that starbucks is making you happy and you are lovin the job so far!
Great mugs DO make the coffee taste better, and I’m thrilled your digging the new gig. I’d be over the moon (faster than the humpback whale, I might add) over free weekly coffee.
I dont know how i missed this post… but i have a favorite mug that is really ugly. i like it bc it is oversized but it is half yellow and half purple and plain and boring and doesn’t match anything. hippie sister steals it often. argggggggg.
you need an espresso machine?!?!!? how about i register one and then gift it to you for being awesome. ill ask mr speedy if this is appropriate.
For a split second I thought you may have commented on this post when you were drinking wine at your pool party, but then I realized that was my IG picture I posted haahaaah. I was like OMG she didn’t know she already commented!! That would have been funny.
HAHAHAHA I love that idea, is that wrong?
How are you at caramel lattes???? I would tip ya for sure 😉
Lattes are my FAVORITE drink to make, and are also my go to for my “foo foo” beverage of choice. I’d make you a MEAN caramel latte!
kathy @ vodka and soda
my fav mug is this see-through one i got from the dollar store! can’t beat a $1 mug 😀
Rach @ This Italian Family
That mug is so cute! And I love that you are such a go-getter! You will be a coffee-making-genius before long! 🙂
I’m so glad that I found your blog. I noticed your comment on Savvy Sister and thought I’d check you out. I love meeting other vegan runners. What’s funny is I used to work for Starbucks too! Everyone was nice and helpful at my store too. Unfortunately, school and work were too much, so I’m just doing the school thing now and, of course, blogging.
Vegans, runners, AND Starbucks baristas?? Those three aren’t common things to have, HA! I tried juggling full time work and full time school when I was first going to college and my grades were not as good as they should have been!! Now I choose one or the other too, and right now I choose work!! Keep on truckin with your schooling!
