This past Monday I said goodbye to my job as a barista, and hello to my new job as a supervisor. In the Starbucks world once you become a supervisor you are no longer considered a barista. However, in the textbook world I will forever be a barista as long as I am with the company because I will still be making beverages for customers, but I now have a few extra tasks and responsibilities added to my day. I digress…
In typical Brittany fashion I spent the days leading up to this change enjoying the “carefree” barista life both in and out of work. I spent my days exploring, eating, meeting blog friends, and drinking good coffee. My kind of perfection.
{ Exploring }
A 9.5 mile hike through the Olympic Forest with perfect weather, and good company.
{ Eating }
Whole Foods in Seattle carries baked goods from my favorite local bakery, and naturally I had to hoard them stock up.
I balanced out the sugar with vegetable rolls.
{ Meeting Blog Friends }
After years of blog reading, texting, letter writing, package sending, and patience, I finally got to meet my Canadian soul mate, Britta.
We met up at the Starbucks Roastery, because…Seattle.
What a gem. We drank great coffee and talked like old friends.
Side note: The coffee I had at the roastery (photo above) literally blew my mind. This roast has a medium body, & a low acidity giving it a sensationally silky mouth feel. The chocolate notes were the strongest I’ve ever experienced in a coffee. It was like the beans were flavored, but they weren’t. What a beautiful coffee.
{ Drinking Good Coffee }
Good enough segue? As if that Brazil reserve roast wasn’t good enough, I snagged myself a bag of Pike Place Reserve beans from the first Starbucks store in Seattle.
Not to be confused with the traditional Pike Place roast served at any and all Starbucks locations, these beans are ONLY sold at this location, and one other store a block up from the original Starbucks. Darker than the standard Pike Roast and SO much better. It’s a real treat when I get this as my weekly coffee markout.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a French press of Pike Place special reserve to drink while I enjoy my day off from training. Back to the grind tomorrow.

i’m going to look for that coffee at my local coffee place – it sounds amazing!!!
familyrulesbyplainjane
So cool that you and Britta met in person and neither of you turned out to be an axe murderer! On a lighter note–the chocolatiest coffee I ever drank was in Vezuela and I was too young and inexperienced to properly appreciate it or find out what it was. But I still remember it with love!
Amy
Oh my gosh, I was so worried when I read the title of your post because I thought you were leaving Starbucks! I’m really glad it’s just a slight change of title instead. I wasn’t ready to stop living vicariously through you and your coffee-filled life! Hopefully I can get back to drinking mine again soon. 🙂 P.S. You totally need to come down here soon so we can spend time at my parents’ cabin and hike all over Tahoe!!!
Brittany
Nope, still living the Starbucks dream. For now. 🙂 YESSSS to that cabin.
Aja
Congratulations on being promoted! That’s exciting even if you will still technically be a barista. My friend works at the Whole Foods in Seattle. I wish I had a Whole Foods less than 2+ hours away.
harveylisam
Congrats on the promotion! The hiking pictures look beautiful. I want to go hiking. Right now.
Jess @hellotofit
Ahh, congratulations on your promotion!! Very happy for you 🙂 depending on my mood, I like to spend my free time by: taking yoga, eating something (not too healthy) with friends, blogging, or sitting couch-potato style on the couch while watching a show with eyes glazed over, mouth slightly open.
Brittany
Haha, love this comment.
Kelsey
How do I like to spend my free time?! It is a loaded questions but I’m up for it. I love dates with friends, going to CrossFit, watching movies or Netflix, reading blogs, reading books, organize (#nerd). Overall, I just like doing the fun little things in life I can’t do while sitting at my desk from 9-5…except that I catch up on blogs during down time (which is a lot this week)…shhh, don’t tell.

Congratulations on your new role! I think the Roastery is the perfect place to meet up with people, as long as it’s not too busy (it does get pretty loud sometimes)!
Someday I’m going to have to pick your brain about hiking trails – there are so many here it’s overwhelming!
Brittany
We went on a Sunday, and it was definitely the busiest I had seen it! Yes, you MUST get out and explore your area.
Jessica
Congratulations on your new placement! That is so exciting and you will rock it. Free time is best spent reading or exploring.

Congratulations! Sounds like an awesome way to spend your last carefree days as barista. I like to get outside in my free time for a hike, run, bike ride. I love my French press; I think it makes coffee taste so much better, especially dark roast. Good luck on your promotion!

I spend (some of) my free time stopping in at my local coffee roastery hoping one day that they will have Ethiopian Harrar on the shelf again! Talk about a great coffee with flavor notes that don’t come from flavoring! I should know better than to follow a blog that make me jealous every time I read it – I makes me spend (some more of) my free time wishing I were hiking in The Olympics again.
Brittany
Ethiopian, an African coffee. Does it have flavors of berries or citrus? A bright coffee perhaps with a tangy acidity? I always love good coffee talk. 🙂
Jane
A great hike and yummy food. Sounds like a great way to spend free time! That’s two of the things I enjoy also, as well as reading lovely blogs such as yours. 🙂
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Kiiiind of had a mini panic attack there when I thought you were leaving Bux. Phew. Don’t do that to me. Congrats on the new position, lady 🙂 And… a better Pike’s?!? Can I come live with you and drink all your coffee?
Brittany
No lie, I’ve thought about sending you a bag because I know you like the traditional roast so much. Not sure if you’d like this one though. I say we give it a try. I’ll message you for your mailing deets. 😉

Congrats girl! I love that you work at Starbucks and wait…you live in Seattle? Did I know this? I was literally JUST there and went to a few different Starbucks throughout the weekend. We should’ve had a coffee date!!
Brittany
Whaaaaa!!? Yea I live about an hour outside of Seattle! Next time you come LET ME KNOW!
BabetaRuns
Wohoooo!! CONGRATS!!!
An hour from Seattle? When I was working for Starbucks, I spend three months training in a store in Tacoma :))
Brittany
Ha! How funny, I go to Tacoma often.

Very exciting on the promotion!! Congrats!!
Those veggie rolls look amazing!!
So fun to meet a blogger friend!!

I think it’s amazing how the Internet connects people. On the one hand it seems obvious, on the other it’s mostly virtual and people meet through a computer screen. A few years ago I met – in person – people I had been communicating with for many months via a writer’s exchange. It was a great experience. New to blogging, I am already amazed to see people from other continents reading my humble posts, and equally amazed to see how interesting and accomplished many of the other blogger are.
Well done on your promotion! And, in a weird way, I am glad blog friends have met in real life.
D
PS: Good coffee is what gets me up in the morning 🙂

Your blog takes my coffee jealousy to another level! Congrats on upgrading to supervisor, you totally, totally deserve it!
Lauren @ ihadabiglunch
Congrats! you’re moving up in the world 🙂 and I mean that because you spend as much time as possible doing things you love. Exploring, hiking, drinking/obsessing over coffee, meeting new people, eating treats, meeting new people, writing….it’s inspirational! I always look to you when I get nervous that I don’t have a “plan” yet — those without a set-in-stone plan seem to really be the happiest. I think we’re both similar in that way 🙂

Congratulations on moving up to supervisor! You ROCK girlfriend! I know how much you love your job, so that is wonderful! Those veggie rolls look amazing too and I would totally justify all the sweets with those too, lol!
