I cannot remember the last time I had a schedule that gave me real weekends. You know, the ones where you have those two days in the week that start with “S” free to do whatever you choose. I used to have sassy mental thoughts towards those that would ask me, “what are your plans this weekend?” To which I would often reply: “I’m working.”

Savoring this morning commute before winter comes.
Now I can finally say I look forward to my weekends, and I already have a mini routine set up for the time away from work. I do use some time for homework, but I also make time for play. Monday through Thursday I try to get home and be in bed by 8:30, but once Friday comes I’m more apt to do crazy things.
Like drinking nitro cold brew coffee at 5pm

I loose my morals with this stuff, it’s that good.
Saturdays I try to sleep in, which for me is waking up around 6am. This allows me to have a calm morning before jumping into errands. Summer months are the perfect time to utilize shopping local, so Saturday mornings I go to the farmers market for my week of produce.
And for these VGF muffins that are divine.
Sometimes I run, sometimes I don’t. It all depends on my mood and plans for the following day. Sundays I enjoy going to church, but sometimes I take off for a trip to the mountains. Last weekend I headed north for a lovely 8.5 mile solo hike to Melakwa Lake.
This hike gave me all the feels as I sat and savored the scenes around me. I was a bit chilly one I got to the lake, but I still sat in silence for about 30 minutes, which is longer than I typically stay at the destination of my hikes.
This weekend was the same, Saturday I hit up the market and finished all my school work. Sunday I set out for a hike, but the universe had another plan for me. I typically drive 2 hours to get to a good hike, and an hour into my drive my tire pressure light came on.
I filled my tires with air, but the light didn’t go off. It then started to pour down rain. I somehow got the feeling I wasn’t meant to go on a hike, and instead went to Costco to have a professional check out my tires. I got the green light that they were fine, headed out for a 4 mile run, and refueled at Whole Foods with vegan lasagna, roasted veggies, and a brownie.
It’s a great feeling when your mind is at peace. You start to care less about eating two muffins in one day (I had to make up for lost time, I missed the muffin man two weekends ago at the farmers market), you start to appreciate little things around you, you start to do things you didn’t used to do, you start to make friends with people you typically wouldn’t talk to, and you let things like missed hiking adventures roll off your back.
On that note, happy Monday.
Q: Do you have a weekend routine?

Beautiful pictures! 🙂 Miss E.
Brittany
Thank you!

Next time I visit, even if I am large with child, can we paaaaaa-leeze go to Melakwa Lake. These pictures are just too amazing and I feel a pull deep in the marrow of my bones to experience this in person.
Love that you are enjoying your new schedule…. our sleeping in time is the same, love itttttttt. My favorite part of my weekends are my Saturday AM long runs. They just set me up for a happy-camper attitude for both days.
Brittany
Yessss for those weekend runs! Double yea to Melakwa with child. You’re a boss lady so you’d be just fine!
Meghan@CleanEatsFastFeets
Even if you are large with child….I like the sound of that. Will you please blog again so I can follow it. K, thanks.
Brittany
I SECOND THIS LILY! Bring back the blog! 🙌🏼

Must. Try. Nitro. Coffee. Now. I keep seeing it on blogs, but have yet to find it near me!
I’m so happy you are loving your weekends! And your commute is just so gorgeous.
Brittany
I found that only this one from Starbucks has been amazing so far! The others I’ve tried were not as good, I must keep exploring.
Jessica
My only routine is not having a routine! 🙂 My plans change about a thousand times over the course of the weekend and I love having the flexibility to always be ready for an adventure.
Brittany
That’s a great switch up from the week! Letting things happen as they happen!
familyrulesbyplainjane
I really think you could earn money as a photographer!
My weekend routine still includes working Saturdays…but I am off work most Fridays and every other Monday. Works for me and my family for now, so I can’t complain. Saturday is a good day to make bank doing couples therapy.
Brittany
Thank you! What a nice thing to say, I do love taking photos.
Angie
Love the pics! Weekend routines, I still get up at the same time. The only thing that’s different from the weekdays is that I (usually) don’t work out and we’re out all day doing whatever we want.
Brittany
I like it!
B
I don’t have much of a weekend routine. It really depends on what’s going on really!
Brittany
Touché, I see this also being what I do in time.
Bound to Be Me
Ok, you have to tell me more about this coffee and those muffins!!!
Brittany
Nitro cold brew from Starbucks is by far the most amazing coffee I’ve ever had. It tastes like chocolate milk. It’s cold brew that’s infused with nitrogen to give a super smooth and rich body. The muffins were equally fantastic.
Bound to Be Me
Oh my gosh, that just sounds amazing!! I am going to have to try one of those 🙂
Will
Your pictures of Melakwa Lake are amazing! Muffins look delicious! Sleeping is tough for me, last night for example it was 4am and I couldn’t fall asleep
I always enjoy reading your blog and seeing your pictures 🙂 nice job!
Brittany
Thank you, Will! It was a lovely weekend of adventure. I hope you got some rest!
kathy @ more coffee, less talky
for a second, i thought those pictures of the views were fake; that’s how beautiful and pristine they are!!!
i love my weekends and my routine is pretty much the same as my daily routine (wake 5/530am, coffee, start my day by reading some tech feeds etc and then head off to exercise).
Brittany
Right!? It was totally real. I’m in awe every time I look at them.
pickyrunner
I remember when I used to lifeguard and a lot of my friends worked M-F. It was weird not having a normal weekend. But then when I had Saturdays and Sundays off I felt lost and didn’t know what to do with myself for 2 days, so I took a part time job. Eventually I fell into a routine, usually a combination of biking/running/eating. I need to start taking advantage of the mountains now that I’m back in New England. And sleeping in for me is 6-6:30am too haha I’m glad I’m not alone in that.
Brittany
I love fellow 6 am sleeping in-ers. Haha.
willrun4disney
My weekends have never really had a routine until recently. Now, I get up at 5:30-6ish on Saturdays and head to the farmer’s market then run errands. The rest of the weekend is filled with mundane things like laundry and cooking but I make time to read and relax.
Brittany
That’s great! Even these necessary activities are fun for me.
Angela
Your pictures are so beautiful I could sit for hours and look at that view!
Brittany
I must go back soon!
Fiona Jarrett
Good thought for the week 😉 Glad you caught up with the muffin man too!
Brittany
Those muffins made my day.
Claudia
The pictures from your hikes are beautiful!
My weekend routine recently got revised, because I finally seem to be out of an I-don’t-care phase that had me in the dumps for a while. With renewed energy I decided to jump into ultra training and Saturdays are long run day now (except if I throw in a marathon as long run, like in two weeks, then I switch Saturday and Sunday activities). Saturday afternoons are for hanging out with my husband. Sundays I go grocery shopping and pre-cook meals for lunches and do household stuff (and maybe a short run).
Brittany
Great routines! Those funks are inevitable, but it’s great when we finally find our way out.
Ellie
I long for the days when people ask me how my weekend was and I don’t respond with “I’m working”. Something to work towards I guess. Although, the grocery stores are less busy when I go during the week 🙂
Brittany
This is true!! And mountains are less crowded on weekdays!
omobtomtom
in bed by 8.30?? you are my hero!!! I try but it never works out. lol. and the views from that hike- so gorgeous!
Brittany
I find when I wake up at 4 am and commute that it’s helps me sleep! 😝
omobtomtom
4am – that’s savage! lol. if it works, it works 🙂
Luv What You Do
Those pictures are unreal! Stunning!
I can’t wait to create a new weekend routine when we move to Chicago in a few weeks. I think there will be so much to explore and enjoy!
Brittany
I’m so excited for you!
Anthony
Cool that the new job gave you a new routine.
Brittany
It’s been lots of fun! 😄

The nature of my work requires me to put in some amount of hours each day, but when I do have those rare whole weekends off, I plan it around some sort of vacation or being out of town…hmm, not sure when was the last time I was in LA and I had a full weekend off from work! Hopefully more of those instances will pop up since I should be getting more help…and hopefully that help can go in on some weekends for me 😉
Brittany
Hopefully all the work you put in now means more weekends in the future!
Josie @ Literature Mistress
Wow you’re an early bird! I appreciate being up at 6am occasionally – it’s so peaceful at that time! However, it doesn’t happen all that often, and when it does it’s the church bells’ fault half the time, which sort of takes the peacefulness out of the whole thing.^^
Brittany
It’s hardwired in my soul, even when I want to sleep more it doesn’t always happen. 😝
Heather
We have similar sleep schedules. I laugh when I go to bed and it’s still light out and I relish the quiet mornings. I thought the maroonish colored muffin was a scoop of sorbet at first! Stunning color- of which I’m sure come from REAL ingredients!
Brittany
TBH I almost asked for the ingredients for that red velvet muffin to check…but then I YOLO’d and just got it! 😝
Rachael @ Catch Me If You Can
you live for the weekend I LIVE for your hiking photos they are so gorgeous!!! That one muffin at first looked like a scoop of sorbet 🙂
Brittany
That’s what the comment before you said! Too funny, I see the sorbetness now.
Shawna
i love this post…the sense of serenity and acceptance with just rolling with whatever is thrown at you and enjoying the moment is such a refreshing perspective. your hike photos are gorgeous and i wish i did things like that, drove out on my own into nature and just lived. i think i need a chance from NYC next year…i feel it in my bones. love this post.
Brittany
Giiirrrlll make that change happen!! It’s scary, but I bet you won’t regret it!
Rach @ This Italian Family
Ah! Hooray for weekends! I’m so glad you have them to enjoy now! 🙂
Brittany
Thank you, me too!!
Melanie
Holy WOW, your pictures are gorgeous!!! What a beautiful hike!!! I’m happy you get to have weekends again. Woo hoo! I can’t believe sleeping in for you is 6 AM! You’re my hero. I suffer with early mornings!
Brittany
Today I slept until 7!! 🙌🏼🙌🏼
Meghan@CleanEatsFastFeets
I have no concept of weekends or weekdays anymore. I know Wednesdays are the lactation support group and Thursdays are CSA pick up days. If it wasn’t for those things, I’d probably lose days altogether. This is what happens when you no longer work a Monday through Friday job. I don’t hate it.
I love, love, love seeing you so happy.
Brittany
Yes! I’m so glad you have this now, we swapped! We crave things that are new, and you were needing this change. I do miss you a ton though. Like you don’t even know.
Atheria
Not to sound like your mom, but should you be hiking THAT remotely alone? Granted, I do things like that, but I get yelled at. LOL
Brittany
My mom gives me lectures too, don’t worry. I DO choose places I know there will be others. There were definitely a handful of people on this trail so don’t worry! 😝
Atheria
I was hiking in a remote area of the Sandia Mountains when I saw out of the corner of my eye something large and black moving in the woods parallel to me. I have never run down a mountain so fast in my life!
Brittany
Oh hell no. 😳
Atheria
I was hiking in the Sandias when I noticed a large black something moving parallel to me in the woods. I blanked and couldn’t recall what to do depending on what the animal was. I finally said to myself, “Fuck it! I’m running!!” and ran down the mountain faster than I’ve ever moved!
Christina Does It All
Having weekends off is the bee’s knees. I don’t have much of a weekend routine except sleep in and do fun things. Haha. Love the pictures and all of the happiness!!!!
Brittany
Sleep and fun, I like your style!
stateeats
Oh that lake! Gorgeous. I love that you sit there and mediate for 30 minutes. That is a habit I need to get into. So often we arrive at our destination, look around a bit and then leave. I’d like to be more mindful that that. Now getting my hubs on board will be another story -Kat
Brittany
Yes! A wonderful reminder even for me. The journey is just as important if not more than the destination.
dave379
Those pictures are magical. Amazing water, and then blooms that look like blueberries on stick. I don’t have a specific weekend routine, but I know I like getting up not too late and often going for a run or also sometimes walk to get started. Then also some cooking at least one day too 🙂
Brittany
A run, and cooking. Sounds like a great day to me!
wanderwithpanda
Beautiful pictures lady! Love that hike, need to go back and make it to the lake this time. ahhhhh having weekends off has to be an amazing feeling. Two whole days in a row and a normal schedule with the world. Glad you are loving it and hope corporate is going awesome so far.
Brittany
I’m loving it! Thank you. 🤗
jennanolten
I love this post! Makes me feel like I should go all chill this weekend and go to some farmers market as well 😛
