  • When Nature Calls

Posted at 10:33 AM by Brittany, on May 20, 2013

Lately I have been spending a lot of time alone. Sometimes it’s peaceful, sometimes it’s not. This weekend I tried to get out and spend time around other people and bless them with my charm and wit. Friday I successfully got lost in nature, kind of. Can you get lost if you’re not alone?

Oops she was mid sentence and I snapped the picture haha.

Oops she was mid sentence when I snapped the picture haha.

I brought my sister with me to go for a walk in the woods because let’s be honest, I am afraid of going into the woods alone. What can I say, I’m a wuss. What I am not afraid of though, is honoring nature when it calls. I was no where near a bathroom and my bladder felt like it was carrying the entire San Diego Zoo. The problem was finding somewhere appropriate to hide. I don’t prefer this way, but I just had to.

    Too out in the open.

    Too out in the open.

Too rude to go on a bridge.

Too rude to go on a bridge.

Can I climb inside this tree stump?

Can I climb inside this tree stump?

Finally when I thought I couldn’t hold my bladder any longer I found a giant rock to hide behind. I told my sister to block my way and she then say, “Can Tiff try?” For those of you that don’t know, my sister has autism and is very impressionable. I probably should have held it, but I REALLY had to go. I said “NO! Don’t ever do this..and pretend it didn’t happen.” She said, “Keep it a secret.” Yes..keep my secret. Sorry mom.

I really enjoyed being out with the ferns, birds, and tree monkeys.

Sunday I spent time with a friend that I’ve known since I was a wee won.

    20130520-091114

For the record, yes I wear this jacket basically everywhere I go. I don’t know what I’ll do when the weather heats up for good. I’ll probably just cut off the sleeves.

While driving around Seattle I spotted the most beautiful graffiti I have ever seen.

    20130520-091122

I have been craving pizza, for WEEKS! For some reason I’ve had no motivation to make my own, and as a vegan it’s not easy to just walk into Domino’s and ask for a pizza without cheese. Plus who knows whats in their crust..ANYWAY. This pizza..was legit.

    20130520-09113020130520-091146

I chose the Field Roast pizza and it had: white garlic sauce, Field Roast, fresh tomatoes, spinach, and I ditched mushrooms for potatoes. Potatoes on pizza is the best. I think they also sprinkled dill on top, which I don’t really care for..but the pizza was so good I was able to ignore the dill. Plus I dumped enough red pepper and nooch on top to plug a flood hole.

    20130520-091201

So good I left some on the side of my mouth for later. Thanks for the candid shot my friend.

So good I left some on the side of my mouth for later. Thanks for the candid shot my friend.

The pizza is made to order, so you know it’s fresh. They don’t sell by the slice so I had to purchase a small, but that just means more for later. I love supporting small businesses.

    20130520-09121420130520-091221

I need to move to Seattle. Happy Monday everyone, I’m off to yoga!

Q: Have you ever used nature as a bathroom? Be honest…

I have used Nature as my bathroom GAZILLIONS OF TIMES (camping, mostly, and while picking corn that summer I decided to do migrant framing).

So I am super intrigued as to what vegan cheese tastes like…is it comparable to non-vegan versions? The pizza looks amazing!! And yeah I have totally used an outdoor bathroom before…I mean it happens, right?

If you’re expecting it to taste JUST like real cheese, you’ll be disappointed. HOWEVER it’s GOOD!! I buy Daiya brand because I think it’s the best. It’s awful when eaten raw, but when melted it’s deeelish!

I LOVE nature and would stay in it 24/7 if I could, I truly believe it’s the best therapy. Being so deep in a forest you can’t see the way out or being in front of the ocean…Hands down amazing.

Glad you “got lost” with your sister and that pizza truly looks wonderful!

Good call on swapping the mushrooms for potatoes and also for peeing behind the giant rock as opposed to the middle of the bridge. You are wise beyond your years my friend.

Yummmmo! I peed once on a trail run with a girl I had never ran with before. I was a good 10 minutes ahead of her and ducked into the woods. She spotted me sneaking out and was all “hey whats up…” woops. We still talk so I didn’t totally ruin our friendship. I love that you took your sister out walking, so nice! I wish my lil bro was around and I could drag him on nature walks with me : ) Instead I just send him faceswap pictures of ourselves from whenever the last time I saw him was. Love!

My pizza’s are always random creations of whatever sounds good for that night! So with that said red sauce is always a go to, and then I top it with spinach, peppers, ALWAYS potatoes these days (seriously you must try) vegan friendly meats, sometimes vegan cheese, sometimes not! I find that a GREAT pizza doesn’t always need cheese! PINEAPPLE is great too..I hope that helps..kinda..HA! Just throw on there whatever sounds good to you and I can almost guarantee it will turn out amazing!! Even better..GRILL the pizza!

Yes, I have used nature as my bathroom, in fact it was only two weeks ago when the lineup for the outhouses at the half marathon were far too long and I would have missed the start. It is a TAD freaky though b/c people are running across the bridge while I am hiding and doing my business and well, it is just awkward.

I was going to comment on how pretty those trees are, but then I saw the pizza, and welp… that’s dang pretty too!

Want that pizza and I’m not vegan. Totally agree with you about the potatoes and the dill (dill is the worst herb ever). I hate to admit that I have used nature as a bathroom way too many times to count. I have the smallest bladder known to man and always have to pee when hiking/running outside.

Haha that’s a funny story- I definitely have done the same. It’s impossible not to on a long hike. That pizza looks amazing. I like how they used so much cheese (I want to try vegan cheese btw). And “nooch”- I just Googled that. I think I’ll start using that because let’s be honest, “nutritional yeast” is probably the least appetizing word in the health food community!! Lol

Here is a new invention that makes going to the bathroom easier, the new Squat Strap offers comfort and convenience when it comes to bathroom fundamentals. What is a Squat Strap? It is a simple device that takes the pain out of going to the bathroom when there isn’t a toilet around. The Squat Strap is a lightweight, foldable nylon strap made of recyclable material that comes equipped with an adjustable carabiner. And that’s all you need to make the calls of nature less painful. The strap loops around the lower back and then around a tree or rock. With the leverage of the tree he is able to lean back into a more natural position instead of trying to squat the old-fashioned way. The strap also allows you to stay higher off the ground, protecting from the potential threats of poison oak or ivy. The Squat Strap is simple but will not fail to amaze in the comfort department. Not only is the Squat Strap pioneering in its use as a bathroom aid, it can also be used to bundle and carry firewood or hoist packs up into trees to keep critters away. With the unbelievable 4 oz. weight of the strap and its plethora of uses, versatility and packability are Squat Strap’s middle names. http://www.squatmonkey.com/ Made in the USA.
