I have a habit of talking the talk, but failing to walk the walk. I talk about many things I want to do in my life, thinking of them as more of a dream than a reality. I’ve made excuse upon excuse ranging from, “I don’t have time” to “I don’t know where to begin.” One of my goals in life, aside from owning chickens and walking on Pluto, is to have a garden. I have longed for the satisfaction of harvesting my own fruits and veggies for years, but have yet to take the plunge..until now.
I salvaged a few wooden wine boxes from TJ’s and I am planning to grow some vegetables in them. With little to no knowledge, I decided to visit a nursery for ideas and inspiration. The nursery had so many fun and exciting things. Every loop and corner had a new ocular adventure.
Food: Fruits, potatoes, onions, herbs..the food plants were the most exciting. I imagined having a backpack with soil for a portable garden/lunches on the go.
Flowers: A nursery would be incomplete without trees and flowers.
Pottery: For those that want variety, decoration, or aren’t lucky enough to have a lot of land to plant in.
Those are all great, but I’d rather have one of these.
Imagine growing a veggie in that. Broccoli, and Brussels, and kale OH MY!
Randoms: Garden trinkets, scenery, plants.
This nursery also offers free classes on certain gardening topics. I signed up for veggie gardening 101 (which I went to earlier today!)
The nursery adventure both inspired and exhausted me. I needed to refuel my tank, and then refuel my brain. Tank first: Cinnamon rolls from the market.
Brain second: An at home experiment with alien growing garlic.
Watch out Ciscoe, there’s a new green thumb in the making!
Q: Any gardening tips for a first timer!?

“One of my goals in life, aside from owning chickens and walking on Pluto, is to have a garden” not only am I loving your other goals, but I know you’re gonna be the best gardener ever!!
I can’t wait to see how you decorate it (hopefully a gnome or two heehee) and what tasty eats you’ll gather 🙂

i kill every plant i ever try to grow. i have even killed a cactus before… yea i have no idea how i did that either.
good luck with ure garden! i love the wooden barrels! it has a more earthy feel than the vases 😀

You crack me up. I have noticed the roses I have purchased recently just will not stay alive..I hope this isn’t a trend for me!

My extent of knowledge in gardening involved the harvesting aspect. Essentially my mom plants the tomatoes, and I eat them 🙂 Good luck with your garden I bet it’s going to be awesome 🙂

dude that place is like paradise! I could so live there. My daddy is actually an herbalist, so I did TONS of gardening growing up. Its all about learning what the plant needs. Sun, shade, water…it has specifics. Once you figure that part out, its easy 🙂
Brittany
I am whoa jealous your dad is a plant man!! You lucky lass you.

I do the same thing “talk the talk but don’t walk the walk” and it’s exactly with this (gardening) Are we twins?! So this weekend I planted my FIRST herbs ever. I’ve been wanting a garden for so long now but I’m not a green thumb at all and still learning. I do have a raspberry bush. I dunno if it’s still alive, it grew last year and all the squirrels ate the raspberries – fail.
Maybe my herbs kept indoors will survive. If you learn anything new pass it on!
Brittany
YAYAYA!! I am most def not a green thumb either, I can only hope to be one day! I think I will keep my goodies inside at night, since they will be on boxes that I can move around. This way the slugs don’t get them (BARFFF I HATE SLUGS SOSOSO MUCH.)
Pumpedpumpkin
haha gross! Slugs make me gag just thinking about them

Gardening is so fun! We don’t have a yard, so I attempted a balcony-garden with several vegetables last summer. I enjoyed it so much.
Brittany
I don’t have a yard just yet either, so it should be a fun experiment to see how things grow in the boxes I have!

This is soo fun. I’ve always wanted to have an apartment with a balcony so I can get some pots and grow some schtuff but I’d have to pay with my arm and leg cause they make rent skyrocket even more. I have no tips for you but it looks soo fun. Can’t wait to hear how it turns out pretty lady! 🙂

Fun!! I hope it goes well for you, Britt!

Gardening is fun! Kind of. I mean, it’s hard work too (and I’m not that good at it). We’re going to have our second year of gardening this spring/summer…Joe plowed the dirt yesterday (I tend to be busy when there’s hard work to do). His parents have a farm, and they are letting us use a corner of an unused field… last year it grew like crazy and we had to give most of our crop away. Hopefully, we’ll be more reasonable this year (no one needs 12 tomato plants!).
Good luck with your planting and growing!
Brittany
Wow you guys are lucky to have the free farm space!! I would lovee to have that! I would also love to live by you, so I can have the veggies you don’t use!
Katherine
I’m not much of a gardener myself – my dad is though! We have a huge vegie patch – growing tomatos, capsicums, beans, all sorts of things. Probably the best advice I have to offer is make sure what you plant is in season – as in plant things according to climate. Also some plants can be planted from cut offs instead of roots – if you have friends that have plants you want then you can cut off stems etc and replant them 🙂 Also drying out seeds from fruits/veg can be helpful for replanting – My dad does that with chillies and beans 🙂

Good for you!! I would love to have a garden one day! I too always say I want to do things but then drag my feet following through with my goals. What’s that about?!

I must say, you are the first couple I have ever heard of taking a gardening class together- I love it! I am no green thumb, but I think marigold flowers are suppose to ward off some sort of insect or small rodent, like a rabbit. I might be totally wrong, but you should probably plant some marigold flowers anyways– just to be safe.
I love all the pots and alien garlic. I don’t think you are suppose to eat the tail part….. it just looks not natural. But from the ninja shots, manfriend could probably handle eating the whole thing. so maybe test it out on him?
I LOVE YOU TOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BRITTTTTTTT xoxoxoxo ❤ you make me smile. and i would totally move to Pluto with you.

what an interesting concept! never once did i think to grow a garden in something like a wooden wine box! i do think that i might need to give this a try! the concept of a garden in the ground is SO suburban and unattractive to me, but i definitely think that i could do a garden in a box!

Never gardened myself but I would love to- can imagine how much fresher your produce will taste!
Tessa @ Amazing Asset
I have never tried gardening myself but it’s actually on my to-do list for the summer! I think doing some research on the internet/in the the library/from magazines will be essential for both of us. I am excited to though, everything will be so much fresher, plus very rewarding!
Love Live & Learn
I have always wanted to have my own garden, to plant flowers, sow vegetable seeds and to learn how to grow all sorts of plants 🙂 I think it would be so much fun and you’d get so much through watching it grow and develop across the days. So I’m hugely excited that you are starting a little garden because I can learn from you!
I’ve always liked nurseries since I was little, so many interesting things. I think it’s great that yours offers free gardening classes! I think I might try planting a herb basket next year 🙂

It’s growing season!!! I’m like you. Total novice, but I’ve got big vegetable garden plans. Emmm, errr, yes I do. No, seriously. I do. But gonna plant me some sunflowers first.

my Mom’s garden has grown so much amazing food! I dont know if I could do it though! When spring/summer comes, she is usually out there every weekend, plus watering twice a day! Sounds a like too much of a time commitment for me…. but she loves it, and I love the goods we have gotten from it- peas, tomatoes, zucchini, broccoli, kale, chard, spinach, lettuce, squash, green beans, herbs, basic, etc. And I agree with you- the wine barrels are way cute!!
GOOD LUCK! I know you can do it!!
