Posted at 7:33 AM by Brittany, on June 8, 2015

National Running Day (NRD) and National Donut Day (NDD) were conveniently set within a day of each other. Coincidence? I think not.

IMG_1757I logged 4 miles on NRD, 3 miles the next day, and 9 more miles between Sat/Sun . I wasn’t kidding when I said “I run to fit into my pants.” Thankfully I have a decent handle on the whole balance thing, and have been eating greens from my garden to counteract sugary donuts. Collards, and spinach, and rosemary – OH MY!

I must be honest though and admit I did NOT actually consume a donut ON NDD. I ended up working later than planned, and good vegan donuts require a bit of travel. I instead daydreamt about the ghosts of donuts past.

    IMG_1772

Specifically about this epic creation from VooDoo Doughnuts in Portland. Chocolate, Oreo’s, and peanut butter. So much yes.

I don’t follow the rules, and despite the hype and excitement behind “national” anything day, I had no problems waiting until Sunday to embark on my donut quest.

When I think donuts, I also think coffee. A piping hot cup of Joe as black as my cat.

    Meow.

    Meow.

SO I ventured near Seattle, climbed a mountain, and got some donuts. Good things come to those who wait. I even risked tummy woes with the chocolate flavor.

    IMG_1920

If a donut does not take up the entire space of your hand when being held, you need another one. Safe to assume you’ll always need two. If we’re being honest again I actually played too long in the forest yesterday and didn’t make it to the donut shop before it closed. I had to settle for the only two choices offered at Whole Foods.

    IMG_1937

    IMG_1929

    IMG_1938

    Worth it.

What I really wanted was a maple bar and an apple fritter. Looks like I’ll be going back.

I also didn’t have these donuts with coffee like I had planned…so this post has turned into a whirlwind of coulda, woulda, shoulda. I did have pizza and a jam filled scone though, and I have a new appreciation for geometry. Triangles = good things.

    IMG_1922

    I ❤ scones.

Q: Did you celebrate NRD or NDD? Yes, yes I do fall prey to the made up holidays, but only when they support my addictions. In reality everyday is a good day for donuts and running. June 6 was national trails day…so I just clumped them all together.

Heehee, I share the same eating habits as you, run to make up for what I eat, and try and cram some healthy stuff in there when I can. I also ate my donut on Sunday – but I don’t think I really needed any extra encouragement. Every week or so is National Donut day for me. 🙂 Beautiful pics from your climb.

Unfortunately I did not get my donut on NDD…also due to work constraints! And even though I planned on getting myself a pretty awesome vegan donut on Sunday, the drive out was too far given the time I had, so I “settled” for a pretzel instead…oh well, there will be other chances 😉

Love the greens from your garden! I walk on NRD and didn’t have a donut on NDD, BUT I’ve had so many outrageous donuts lately (and knew I’d be having cake Sun) that I didn’t fret. Those kind of holidays are fun to celebrate if they are convenient, haha. Gorgeous hike! That scone looks so healthy yet so good! Best of both worlds… or maybe just deceiving 😉

Actually it tasted quite healthy too, very mild in sweetness compared to other scones I’ve had, and the jam was all on the outside so it wasn’t smothered by it. Oats and apple pieces filled the rest!! mmmmmm.

YUM. At least Whole Foods desserts are reliable. You didn’t just have to settle for a random grocery store buy or a gas station. haha! I alllllways wanted to go to Voodoo donuts! I hate donuts, but I have a feeling if they are covered in peanut butter + chocolate, I’d change my tune.

Those views are BEAUTIFUL. I want to road trip to you and climb mountains. It sounds romantic. Hahaha. My imaginary boyfriend would love it!

Donuts are tasty but, generally speaking, they usually look better than they taste (IMO); however, I absolutely LOVE scones and they never fail to disappoint. I want to jump through the screen and eat that jam filled scone!!

Not saying that donuts aren’t tasty but they usually leave me unsatisfied. Boo.

I actually don’t ever find myself craving donuts. Usually they satisfy whatever craving I do get, if that, but I never go for donuts first. So basically I totally get what you’re saying.

I’m embarrassed to say I didn’t eat donuts on National Donut Day or any day around it. We just don’t have good donuts here in Baltimore! I need to get out west so I can try out all the famous spots. Those donuts would be worth it. But I’d never just eat one. That’s pretty much impossible.

Those views are worth pretty much anything. They’re spectacular.

Also, I did not eat donuts that day either. In fact, it’s been awhile although apple fritters are some of my favorites. The Hubby and I used to have a tradition when we returned from a beach vacation, we’d order a dozen donuts to share. It was fun.

I didn’t run, but we did try to find donuts – and failed. Not enough bakeries that make them in my town. So we settled on buying a pie and pints of ice cream. It helped fill the void.

Sooo I baked muffins on NDD, which probably goes to show you how seriously I take these national food holidays. Honestly, though, allergy-friendly donuts are hard to find for some reason. Most of the ones around here have [traces of] nuts, meaning I usually have to make my own, and they need end up being -quite- as good. So muffins it is

Funny enough… I didn’t celebrate either! Running day fell on my off day (so I suppose I celebrated the day before and the day after instead), and donut day… Well, as much as I WANTED to celebrate, my tummy hasn’t been able to handle donuts of any kid and balloons into Santa-sized proportions. So I’m living vicariously through you and your WF donuts! And seriously, after a hike that gorgeous, I’d definitely be okay “settling” for WF donuts. They still look a LOT better than many of the donuts sold around here!

Your post reminds me of my attempt to get goodies at my favorite bakery today… I really wanted a cupcake, so I drove all the way down there – only to see a big fat CLOSED sign on the door. Donuts and coffee are a perfect combination – how did you miss out on the coffee?!?! I celebrated NRD with a speed workout run and I was going to get a donut on NDD but…I went in the evening and Dunkin Donuts was out already. I shouldn’t be eating a donut anyway (I stick to mostly GF eating) so I saw this as a sign and went home donut-less. But then I had ice cream instead 😀
