My trip to Stumptown coffee would fall into the playing tourist category, but was so monumental it deserved a post of its own. After my race I needed coffee, but I also needed something else…something sugary and naughty. I needed a VOODOO doughnut.
Initially I went to the location downtown, but after seeing how long the line was I decided to drive to another location. Still a line, but not nearly as long.
The wait time was about 15 minutes, not bad. I somehow pulled willpower out of my back pocket as if it had always lived there, and I saved my two donuts for later.
I got a classic powdered doughnut with a raspberry filling, but you don’t want to see that. What you’ll want to see is the chocolate, Oreo, peanut butter doughnut that rocked my face so hard I kicked myself for only getting one. Seriously..unreal. I’d drive back just for this…
I saved this treat for specific reasons, I had my stomach set on a Portland vegan meal. I’ve wanted to try Bye and Bye since reading about it in a blog post a yr ago. I’ve never been a fan of bars or pubs, but this place stole my soul. I would come here every weekend. With an all vegan menu, cute customers, and an even cuter bartender I was swooning..hard.
The food was amazing, but my photos are terrible. It was dark and I used my iPhone, so I’ll spare you my atrocities and share these photos I found online. My meal was out of this world, and I could easily eat the same thing everyday. Photos linked to original source.
With a full tummy, it was time to finally head home! I got about 20 minutes into my drive and it was doughnut time. My two day trip to Portland has been alive all week as I spaced out these blog posts, and I can’t wait to go back. When I do I’m grabbing a Voodoo to go with my free Stumptown coffee. Pure bliss.
Q: What’s your favorite way to experience new areas? By foot, food, and exploration!

Ive always wanted to try voodoo donuts. I’ve heard people talk about it a lot! I’m not even a big donut person but those I would try. You ate well on your vacation 🙂
The Zen Kat
Yes food is my favorite way to explore a new place. And lots of walking to get in exercise so it works, right? 🙂
Brittany
My thoughts exactly!!! I love walking TO the place I want to eat, when I earn my food it tastes so much better!
Rach @ This Italian Family
I don’t know how you managed to be so self controlled with those donuts. If I’d been looking forward to something like that, I don’t think I would’ve been able to wait, haha!
Davida @The Healthy Maven
Alright, enough is enough. I cannot read another blog about Voodoo donuts. I just need to get on a plane and bee-line directly to their store. I’m dying here.
Randomly I have been having insatiable cravings for donuts. I made a mug cake yesterday and while it tasted like a donut, it was a cake and not a donut so I wasn’t satisfied. Something is seriously wrong with me…
Brittany
Visit Voodoo…ASAP..and then call me and I’ll meet you there. I know why your craving wasn’t satisfied, because a CAKE and a DOUGHNUT are different!! GET YOUR ASS A DOUGHNUT GIRL!
Britta
I think I’m actually drooling. Is it bad that I want to go to Portland just so I can have one of those donuts?! Ughhhhhh looks sooo good. I’m glad that you had such a great time! Where did you stay while you were down there? Also, I recently discovered that a place called Luke’s in Vancouver SELLS and makes coffees to purchase with Strumptown coffee – WHAT? I haven’t been yet but I am going to go soon!
And you know me, a new city is explored through food!
Brittany
I stayed in a SHANKY ass hotel that was like 10 minutes from the heart of Portland, and 10 minutes from my race. I am a cheap MOFO and my mom was like, “NEXT TIME I AM PICKING THE HOTEL.”
It wasn’t THAATT bad, come on we just needed it to sleep!! HAHAHA.
Go get yourself a cup of that Stumptown Joe!
Meghan @ fitnesscrEATures
Girlfriend. I just sent the link of this post to Bek because I was drooling over that donut, are you freaking kidding me? I love all this Portland stuff mostly because I have NEVER been there even having grown up only a few hours away. Isn’t that crazy?? And that tofu bowl looks amazeballs.
Brittany
You must get your fine fanny to Portland one of these days. And then contact me so I can meet you there!
Ashley @MilesonOats
WHATT! I’ve watched a review of their doughnut shop on Food Network at least 2x! I am insanely jealous you got to experience that place!! My favorite way to explore new places is on foot and going to historical scenery 🙂
Amy @ A Desert Girl
That doughnut. I’m not sure I can survive the day without one.
Christina Does It All
OMG I need that donut RIGHT NOW! I’m at work, drooling in front of my computer. I’m sure this is very attractive. 😉
Brittany
Blame it on the baby belly! 😉
Hannah
So jealous of your Bye and Bye meal! We dumbly went to Bye and Bye after dinner when it made no sense. It was still cool though! Voodoo’s cake doughnuts are so boss.
P
And I thought Native Foods was top notch! I think I’ll have to go to Portland just to try foods at both of those places!! The Chili Pie sounds awesome!
Also, I love how one of the donuts in the backdrop has a mustache–so cute ^^!!
Amalia
This is amazing! I love exploring a new city through its food (sometimes I do that here, I think I have a list of foodie places I must visit as long as my arm). Now I have to go to Portland, its official.
Also, would you mind sharing where you get the back pocket willpower stash? I need some 🙂
kathy @ vodka and soda
OMG I want a donut now!!!
Ja @Ja on the RUN
You just made this pregnant lady drool over your doughnuts!!! I WANT SOME!!!
katalysthealth
Ive heard so much about those donuts. And seriously, Ive been craving one for WEEKS now, and your pictures really aren’t helping matters! That thing looks too good to be true….
Kristina at damntenpounds
OMG that line!!! At least the wait was worth it. We waited in a line wrapped around the corner for Mike’s Pastry’s in Boston. Totally worth it!

Hang on… didn’t the Rogue Brewery (also of Portland) collaborate with these guys to produce their Maple Bacon ale? I do believe its called the Voodoo ale and that logo is unmistakable…
Brittany
YES! I’ve actually never tried their collaboration, but it’s VERY popular. As is the maple bacon doughnut, which I also haven’t tried. HA.
storiesbywilliams
I know, its a bit of a daunting combination isn’t it? Beer with maple and bacon? Have you tried ANY Rogue beer though? Because if you are one of the those amazing women who actually enjoy beer, I can’t recommend them enough. Definitely one of my favorite breweries of all time.
Choc Chip Uru
This donut looks delicious, I love it. Oh how I want to try it now!!!
Cheers

di @ life of di.
What a delicious donut! When Marty and I went to Voodoo- we split the little voodoo doll donut! So good! I want to go back to Portland just so I can eat my way around the city 🙂 Also, that nutritional yeast tofu sounds really good. I’m going to try to find a recipe like that I can make at home!
Drew Kunz
voodoo donuts are the bomb!
Brittany
So good, I should have brought an entire box home with me.
PJ Sassifras
Voodoo Doughnuts are AMAZEBALLS! Thanks for the tip on Bye and Bye.
Hubby & I love to explore local restaurants when on vacation. What is the point of eating at a chain you can have at home?
In the past couple of years we’ve been parking the car & either walking or using public transportation. It is so much easier.
jessiebearwhat
I am so super jealous of your doughnut!
cisforcourtney
mmmm! the old dirty bastard from voodoo donuts is my fave! we recently just got a voodoo donuts in denver!
Brittany
AHH YES! That is so awesome.
PNWRunner
I WANT THAT DONUT IN MY MOUTH RIGHT MEOW. I’ve been wanting to go to Voodoo donuts for I don’t know how many years!!! Probably ever since I saw the episode on the Travel Channel.
Whitney @ To Live & Diet in L.A.
Holy crap that’s the best looking donut I’ve ever seen in my life. Now I’m hungry.
Amy
Girl, that donut looks AMAZING!!! I’d drive alllllll the way up to Portland just to have one with you. 100% honest truth. 🙂 I actually just had a friend move to Portland this week, so I’ll definitely recommend your amazing Voodoo donut!
And you’re totally right; I love exploring new places by foot and by food. My dad is the best travel companion because he’ll easily strike up a conversation with any locals, which always means we find the most incredible restaurants and sights. So fun!
Brittany
Your dad sounds like he would make the perfect best friend, outdoorsy, makes things out of wood, likes to travel, talks to locals…I wanna hang out with him almost as much as I want to have a Voodoo doughnut with YOU! HAHA.
Amy
I’m almost 100% certain that I could convince him to go back to Seattle with me! We went 8 or 9 years ago to see a Mariners game, and it was one of our favorites. That wouldn’t exactly get you and I a Voodoo donut, but at least we could hang out! 😉
Meredith
Oh my gosh, neeeeeed those pretzel bites(and the donut!) looks like such a neat place!
apartmentwife
um, yum! i want to jump into the photograph and take pictures and eat donuts and round around adventuring by your side. doesn’t that sound kind of perfect? we have this place in minneapolis called ‘glam doll’ donuts that has similarly unique and wonderful flavors, and, somewhat famously, they stay open til 3am:)
Brittany
That sounds 100% perfect. You would make an exceptional travel partner! 😉 I am pretty sure Voodoo is open 24 hrs..HA!
An Unrefined Vegan
How can that line be for real? Is it like that every day?! Franchise that baby right on into Oklahoma City!!
Melanie
Oh my word, I’ve never heard of Voodoo donuts, but now I need to have one! Your donut looked fabulous and I can’t believe that long line!
DistrictSweats
Hahaha, Bye and Bye is one of my favorite places in town. I always get the Eastern Bowl and always love it. Drool. Good choice.
Brittany
I’m insanely jealous of your easy access to this place.
Meghan@CleanEatsFastFeets
I have been to VooDoo Donuts. I waited in that line. It was totally worth it!
ahellams
That is not even real life!! I need you to mail me that donut tomorrow!!
Heather @ HeatherRunsFast.com
I’ve seen that Voo DOo Doughnuts shop on so many Food shows! Ugh, I want one! And that Eastern bowl looks freakin delicious! Nutritional yeast breaded tofu? What a great idea! Think I’ll be trying that one 🙂
Missy
Nutritional yeast breaded tofu say wwhhhaaaatt?
That donut looks like people wouldpay a lot of money for it. Also? You are the first person I “know” who likes “jelly-filled” donuts—- Though I bet the phrase “jelly-filled” does POOR justice to whatever rasberry filling was in that donut you got.
Alex
VOODOO FTW YES YES YES!!!!!!!! The next time I come up there, we HAVE to go together!!!!!! That other restaurant sounds delicious too! Foodie trips are the bomb! 🙂
Luv What You Do
My mouth is watering right now and i just ate a huge dinner!
I am saving this and hoping to get to Portland this fall!
Melissa @ Al Forno Mementos
I’m glad you liked voodoo … for some reason I didn’t think it was that great. maybe I had a bad batch.
