Posted at 9:39 AM by Brittany, on July 31, 2013

Monday was my sisters 29th birthday. To celebrate, my family and I went to eat at Red Robin. The weather was nice, which permitted us to sit outside. Big mistake. While it felt good outside, I think the waitress forgot there were people out there because it took WAY too long to get our food. I was getting so hangry I was ready to fight.

    20130731-083343

My brain was like a forest fire until this burger was placed in front of my face. The second I got my food I turned into a tornado and it’s a wonder I didn’t choke. Sometimes I wish I had a set of gills that I could use to breathe through while I run train on my food.

    20130731-083350

I would have eaten the plate if it weren’t plastic. Do not cross me when I am hangry.

    I look something like this.

    I look something like this.

I don’t go out to eat very often because: A. It can get expensive, B. My waistline doesn’t like it, and C. I like to know exactly what I am eating, and with restaurant meals that’s almost impossible. With that said when I DO go out to eat, I take my “vegan” diet with a grain of salt. I like to go to all vegan restaurants when I can, but sometimes I go elsewhere.

This meal for example is a Boca burger. The patty is vegan, but I have no idea what’s in the bun. Normally whole wheat buns are vegan, but I don’t ask when I am at restaurants. I don’t want to be “that person” that asks for every single ingredient, and if I were I should just stay home. SO I don’t eat out often, but when I do I close my eyes and assume my bread is vegan. C’est la vie..vegan with benefits at its finest.

My booty has started to resemble Jupiter lately and in order to combat the severe case of belly bloat I have, today will be a day of SMOOTHIES! Bye bye broccoli gas, hello flat belly. Lots of fruit means LOTs of fiber. I like to ensure my colon never looks like an LA freeway in the middle of rush hour traffic. I need smooth sailing every day.

    20130731-083319

Thankfully my work has fruit. I’ve been drinking this smoothie nearly every day. So simple, but so good. Splash of strawberry puree (I balance this with some water) splash of soy milk, a banana, and two packs of blueberries. Who says you have to get coffee at a coffee shop? Free smoothies never tasted so good.

Q: Do you turn into a tornado when you are hangry?

    b

DO YOU GET FREE SMOOTHIES THERE!?!? perhaps I need to get a side job at starbuckys or barnes and nobles… either one would feed my addicitons. I know exactly what you mean aobut eating out! I’m really glad you are able to take your vegan with a ‘grain of salt’ and be flexible b/c honestly, nothing is more annoying that inviting someone out and then having them pick the menu apart and be like ‘well i cant possibly eat this or that or this…” its like ….. not fun. I have a friend who is super into paleo diet all of a sudden and i kind of want to stab her with a steak knife. she actualy asked me if my wedding menu would include a paleo option. @#%%&%^%$#%#@%^^ WHAT THE FREAKKKKKK.

Back to you- I love you and that you are so accomondating whatever event you are celebrating and I am sure your sister appreicated your presense and that food would have been devoured immediately by me too. Fabulous choice. What is life if you aren’t willing to let your waist line expand a little and treat yourself ??

I want a smoothie now. And some buns. (that sounds dirty, I’m really talking about the bread)

Love Red Robin, especially their endless fries!! 🙂 And I hear you…eating vegetarian/vegan at restaurants can be really challenging because you don’t REALLY know if what they are saying is vegan is actually vegan! As a result, I like to stick to more local veg/vegan-friendly restaurants.

Oh my goodness, yes! We went out to dinner at one of our favorite restaurant’s on Saturday night and it took over thirty minutes to get our food, which is really unusual for this place. I was so hungry and mad because our waitress didn’t come over often enough (i needed a lot of iced tea and water since my stomach was angry and needed something!)…not one of my favorite experiences there!

I also keep forgetting to have my smoothies after work, not only are the delicious they supplement my dinner intake…anyways glad to hear you will be lacking broccoli gas for a while…who has time for that?

Hehe LOVE how hangry you get because I’m exactly the same. I’m a total monster! The good thing though is that when friends/family see me getting irritable they know to feed me and it’ll all be a-ok… Think it is great that you are able to be more flexible with your veganism at restos (but would understand too if you wasn’t!), just because I’ve been out with people who have to ask about every single thing on the plate (some for allergy reasons) and it doesn’t look fun… Especially when you’re starving and willing to eat anything, plastic included 😉 So jealous of free smoothies! Think I’m going to have to hit up the smoothie-monster soon too for all the reasons you mentioned!

Okay after living in Seattle and then moving to ATL (where the closest red robin is super super far away) I miss it like crazy. No, it’s not super delicious, no it’s not the best but dang if it isn’t super satisfying if you need it! I am probably over hyping it, but you never realize how much you miss things when they’re gone!! Haha, I absolutely ADORE your vegan attitude and I feel similarly about my diet. I prefer to stay in and know what I’m putting into my body but if I go out, then I just do so. I don’t bull sh*t around, I just order what I think is likely best and roll with it. Not the same as you, but similar. 🙂
Good luck making your color all better! 🙂 That smoothie sounds great, I have yet to make a smoothie this summer even though I keep thinking I’m going to… Argh. The stresses of being lazy in the mornings….

Ohmygosh Brittany, you have the BEST analogies!! An LA freeway in rush hour traffic? I’m dying of laughter over here! I have a really similar take on eating out, which is probably why we usually go to the same (really good, really cheap) places. Usually on Tuesday nights, when tacos are only $1 and a huge scoop of ice cream (or sorbet) at Baskin Robbins is only $1.50! Add in a $5.50 movie, and it’s the best date night of the week. 😉 Anyway, that was a bit of a tangent to say… I like to know what’s in my food too. And normally, the food isn’t as healthy (or yummy) as what I can make at home!

I’m an absolute terror when I’m hungry. Cranky, snarky, ready to mow down anyone who gets in the way of me and my food… Yeah, not a pretty picture. I think that’s why I always make sure to carry snacks on me. You know… to keep other people safe. And I have to say that I love your lax attitude about being vegan and eating out… I’ll admit that I’m definitely not the biggest fan of “those” people 😯

Hahaha, hilarious. I hear ya on the eating out at restaurants thing. Eating Paleo brings about the same burden of asking exactly what is in everything. After doing it for so long, I’ve eased up a bit because A. It’s a hassle and you’re “that girl” and B. I now have a pretty good grasp of what’s in what when I go out. I’ve just learned to accept that everyone uses vegetable oil to cook with. Oh well. So yeah, don’t eat out as much is my philosophy too. Your mom is adorable with that comment!

I have a smoothie every day 🙂 Mine is made at home, but it’s delicious non the less!
I’m pretty picky when we go out to eat… hence why we don’t go out much. If it’s a special occasion I’ll just order whatever, but if I’m just grabbing lunch/dinner with someone, I’ll ask about ingredients and substitutions. I always start off by apologizing, saying “I’m sorry, I’m THAT customer,” haha. I feel like if I’m nice about it, they won’t spit in my food… who knows if it works… just another reason we don’t eat out much!

We went to Red Robin last week! I got my Boca Burger too. It was YUM-O! We even took the kids who never get to go out to eat. They have a big binder with all of the allergy info so I was that lady. Thankfully, I saw them pass it out to several other folks while we were there and they were great about keeping my son’s food safe.
I was thinking it would be a fun place to take other people because I could order a seemingly normal meal without looking like a weirdy.

You sure can!!! Basically this is just a strawberry smoothie, but I don’t get the protein powder and I get it with soy milk instead of 2%. Then you’d just have to ask for them to add blueberries (they have fresh blueberries for the oatmeal) and voila! They also have an orange mango base that is super tasty too.

You sound like a good kind of vegan. There’s being picky at a restaurant because the wrong food will kill you and then there’s eating preferences. If I don’t eat, I go past hungry and I start feeling sick. If I get to that stage, the best thing for it is a glass of water and a nap. Best not to deal with me for a while.

When I get hungry I get irritated very easily so I know just how you feel. I remember those car rides on long trips where we would leave early in the morning and try to go as long as possible before stopping to get breakfast. Sometimes the hunger pains would hit in the middle of a long stretch of highway and by the time we were able to stop I was so hungry… that I wasn’t hungry anymore. Do you know the feeling? Where you have to force yourself to eat? Hate that.

I turn into a monster when I’m hangry. Not pretty. And I have a very fast metabolism, so it happens every 3 hours. Needless to say, I carry food wherever I go.

Nothing makes me angrier than being hangry! Except being hangry and being NOWHERE NEAR edibles of any kind.

mmm those fries look goooooood. I love that you’re not all VEGAN when you go out and eat because you know sometimes it’s not possible unless you become THAT person. Love that dog picture. haha annnnnd now I know why I’m always bloated with a big belly … I eat broccoli every single meal. -_- time to have some change. maybe my belly will be a little more flat. 🙂

I most definitely turn into a tornado when I’m hangry. I can get pretty cranky prior to diving into the food too!

“…I like to ensure my colon never looks like an LA freeway in the middle of rush hour traffic. I need smooth sailing every day.” By far the BEST comparison I’ve heard in a long time! Ha Ha Ha!

I turn into an extremely unpleasant girl when I’m hungry so I try to avoid it at all costs!! You are not alone on the hangry feeling 🙂
Love the looks of that smoothie, too!

That burger looked delicious 🙂 I can either get angry and grumpy or exceptionally low energy and a bit delirious when I am hungry!

If I worked at Starbucks, I’d live on smoothies and espresso. I’d be a maniac, which is also how I get when I’m hungry. The Hubby always makes sure we have snacks handy because he doesn’t want to get stuck with a hangry Meghan. Poor guy.

Smart of you to whip up those customized smoothies at work! I do turn into a tornado if I’m hungry enough. Get me in the kitchen after I’ve been skating for a couple of hours and everything looks good, my main concern is getting some calories in!

If I’m hungry, get out of the way! And those smoothies sound good!

I always think it’s good to let go of some of our food restrictions when we eat out and just enjoy ourselves so I love your attitude towards it! It’s much healthier to be that way 🙂 I am definitely going to be doing a few smoothie days when I get back from my holiday… I’ll need it! 😛

Oooh I want to come to your Starbucks and have you make me fruit smoothies like that! Looks so good! Also, when I get hungry… it’s not pretty. I’m normally such a happy/bouncy person so when I get hungry and suddenly get every quiet… it’s not a good thing. 😉 I carry snacks for this reason!

Girl.. I love your smoothie recreations. My first few stores were awesome in that they didn’t care what we put in the blender as long as we cleaned it… but my last store we weren’t allowed any “outside food” in the store so I had to sneak my smoothies and almond milk lattes early in the morning before anyone would catch me.

Also I love the vegan with benefits — its true, I enjoy the fact that you don’t pick apart the menu.

Also I’ve been working on taking 20 minutes to eat my meal…. but I’m failing, hard. Who wants to chew for that long when they are that hungry!?
