Human Garbage Disposal

If you’ve read my blog for a while, you know that I hate wasting food. I hate wasting food more than I hate missing my turn to grab a free cookie. When I see edible items rocking a fuzzy new hairdo I get slightly perturbed. When I shop for food, I make sure I ONLY buy what I am going to eat..nothing more, and nothing less. Living with other people sometimes means that they buy food they don’t end up eating.

I give food items a time limit. If these items are not consumed in a decent amount of time, they are free for all and will be consumed by me before they are consumed by the garbage. This weeks prized goods came in pairs: two cucumbers, two sweet potatoes, two green peppers, and two avocados. The time limit was up and I officially stated claim over these items. The cucumbers didn’t make it. I was only able to salvage half of one and by the next day the rest had mysteriously changed to a blue fuzzy color. The remaining items were successfully consumed over four meals.

All mixed together

Meal number one shown above: Finished off tomatoes and broccoli from Manfriend’s house, along with one avocado, one sweet potato, half of a green pepper, spinach from my house, cheese, and AMAZING NEW SAUSAGES! All mixed in with some rice mac and cheese. All we “purchased” for this meal were the sausages and the mac n cheese.

SO onto the sausages. I have noticed that I have a bit of an intolerance to soy products. I get super gassy when I consume too much soy. I mean..clear the room gassy. In an attempt to conduct my own experiment, I cut out soy for a week. The gas was gone. The bloating was gone. The SMELL was gone. I now try to avoid soy at all costs and have been soy free for over a month. With that being said, most vegetarian “meats” are soy based. Manfriend discovered a new vegan sausage with NO SOY!

This is one of three flavors, so far I am whoa impressed. Two great things..26g of protein AND this product is out of Seattle! The protein comes from wheat, not soy which means I am no longer ostracized on the floor with the dog at night.

Meal number two shown above: Fruit, toast, and eggs with half an avocado, half a green pepper, leftover tomatoes, onions, and a sausage.

Meal number three shown below: Tricolor quinoa mixed with the LAST of the bell pepper, LAST of the tomato, eggplant, onion, pistachios, and the LAST of the green pepper.

Meal number four will be tonight and will include the other sweet potato and the other avocado. Nothing else has followed the cucumbers into the trash. WIN! My street name is “Human Garbage Disposal.”

New item: Multi colored cauliflower. Purple, green, and yellow.

No major flavor difference was detected, but it was fun eating a skittle like explosion.

Lastly in ‘awesome news’: I will be stepping out of my comfort zone and trying three new Kombucha flavors in the upcoming weeks. I have been stuck on the multi-green flavor for months. Amanda at Synergy Drinks has been kind enough to give me three coupons for a free drink!

Thank you thank you thank you Amanda! I will be posting about the new flavor consumptions.

Q’s:

  • Do you try to eat all your food before it goes bad?
  • What is your favorite Kombucha flavor!?

Purple, green and yellow cauliflower?!?! MY LIFE IS NOW COMPLETE! :D I must get my hands on some of those, I want to eat the skittles rainbow too!
I’ve never had kombucha, I’m a huge scaredy cat haha ;)

  2. Manfriend says:

My fav Kombucha is Gingerade closely followed by the multigreem. Sometimes I tend to throw food away but someone I know (hint, wink, cough) saves it from the garbage can.

  3. I hate wasting food too! That cauliflower looks so cool :D

My fave kombucha is grape, definitely. I have some free kombucha coupons that I won in a giveaway–it’s so great. They are darn expensive! But I do understand why…I used to buy them all the time, and then I made kombucha…and it wasn’t good. So I just stopped making and stopped justifying the expense. Strawberry is also amazing. And the ginger ones are good when your belly is kinda messed up…

I try to use food before it goes bad, but I throw away a lot. I really am working on that.

whoa whoa whoa- i’m missing something. Did you dye that cauliflower? lol. I feel like I’m having a total blond moment!
I always try to eat food before it goes to waste! I am the human garbage disposal in my house :P

  6. Wow, that cauliflower looks awesome. I haven’t seen the purple or green in my grocery store!

  7. Sarah says:

I make sure to buy just enough produce for 4 days so that it won’t go bad but I have enough and then just shop, conviently work at a market :) Hahha love your meal ideas though and the cauliflower that is so sweeeeeeeet!

Ah kombucha, hmm cranberry or ginger all the way :)

  8. Simply Life says:

oh I hate throwing food away as well and always try to find some way of using/eating it before I would otherwise have to throw it away!

I love all of your meals and how you try to not waste food. I’m trying to do that too but meal planning and eating eveything that I buy before it goes bad.

Love those colorful cauliflower. They’re beautiful!

  10. I had no idea about all of that different cauliflower! So pretty :)
I love that you don’t waste food at all.. putting in a bit of extra effort is completely worth it!

  11. I hate wasting food too!!! All of your meals look so yummy. Ah I love so many Kombucha flavors, but my favorite may be the blue one (I forgot what it’s called) or the raspberry!

  12. I love your technicolor cauliflower. I definitely try to eat everything before it goes bad… some weeks I do better than others. I will chop up veggies and freeze them if I don’t think I can eat them on time.

Oh my goodness gracious the mac n cheese and the quinoa look so good! Yum. I am HORRIBLE with buying too much produce and letting it go bad. I need to be better about this cause it’ll help with my wallet so much more.

  14. So glad you found a non-soy based vegetarian sausage! That’s wonderful! :)

    Also, that cauliflower – amazing!

  15. the cauliflower is gorgeous!!! i intend to make mashed cauli using the purple in the very soon foreseeable future. purple is so pretty! my favourite colour!

  16. purple broccoli?! what in the world….

brit, i feel the same way. I’m hate wasting food with a passion. Even when I’m completely stuffed I always make sure I finish what is on my plate. your nickname reminds me of what I call one of my friends who has a bottomless stomach and eats whatever others can’t finish: the garbarator.

  17. Errign says:

I like the gingerberry kombucha and all of the Botanic ones!

  18. kat says:

Good job on conducting your experiment and figuring out your issue with soy! And that sausage sounds amazing. I’m not a fan of sausage in general, but for some reason that one sounds amazing! And ya I hate wasting food. When my veggies are going bad I typically make a big pot of soup with them!

  19. glidingcalm says:

    1) those eggs look delicious!! i need to start pairing avocado with my eggs more often, but avocados are a rare treat for my budget! Sometimes I can justify buying one for $1.50 or worse $2. however, they do make a chicken salad redonkulously delish.

    2) HECK YES! I totally understand what you mean about wasting food!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! my roomie and I have divided up the fridge and one of my biggest pet peeves is just watching his organic mixed greens lettuce (u know in the HUGE plastic CONTAINER) just go to waste! plus he has moldy food in other plastic containers and I am like MAN, please clear that out. but i dont know how to ask nicely…..i always feel that he will think im super annoying. Maybe I’ll ask my therapist this question…..

But yeah, I hate watching his GOOD FOOD- cheese, veggies, etc. that I WOULD EAT go to waste. Perhaps I should have this convo with him…

  20. WHAT?! PURPLE AND GREEN CAULIFLOWER?!
i still have yet to try avacado! I hear it’s an interesting taste. I’m hesitant what’s the best way to eat it!?
I can’t stand to waste food – especially now that my own personal human garbage disposal has left (Kyle finishes everything off for me) I’m stick with eating massive amounts of foods alone. Why on earth do we live 3000 miles away from each other!

You’re my idol. I have serious issues eating things when I know their time is running out. Like if a yogurt is a day before being expired, I’ll give it to my husband to eat. However, I’m all about NOT wasting food! Good post!

  22. hippierunner says:

free kombucha?! that rocks! my fave flavors are trilogy, ginger, cranberry. i love kombucha but have cut myself off from it recently to save money. Definitely share which kind you get! (so we can all drink it vicariously!)
